Construction Scotland Innovation Centre (CSIC)

We have an exciting opportunity to join Construction Scotland Innovation Centre as a Head of Commercial & Operations.

The Construction Scotland Innovation Centre supports Scotland's construction related businesses, clients and key stakeholders to collaborate, innovate and grow by matching innovation requirements with business support and academic excellence. We offer advice, funding, facilitation and access to appropriate expertise, improving Scotland's competitiveness and growing economic, social and environmental impact. Activity focuses around key challenges & opportunities for the sector including digital transformation, accelerating industrialisation, building sustainably and cultural change.

The role is based at CSIC's Innovation Factory at Hamilton International Technology Park. This unique GBP 2.5million facility supports the construction sector to innovate, collaborate and grow, featuring advanced technology and specialist equipment including industrial robotics, digital manufacturing tools and virtual and augmented reality technology that can be used for prototyping, commercialisation and training purposes, alongside meeting and event spaces where the sector can come together to explore the future and learn.

The Role

The Head of Commercial & Operations is a critical role within CSIC and offers an exciting opportunity for someone seeking real responsibility for leading the development and delivery of key operational support and commercial income generating activity within a rapidly growing and highly respected organisation.

Reporting directly to the CEO, the role holder will be a member of CSIC's Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and carry responsibility for the leadership and development of CSIC's commercial, technical and operations strategies including the scoping, driving and management of three fundamental areas of activity. Firstly, CSIC's core support infrastructure, so as to ensure robust, safe and effective operations. Secondly, CSIC's technical and factory based programme. Thirdly, CSIC's commercial income generation activity, building capacity to meet the strategic direction of the organisation.

The role will include regular travel across Scotland and the UK and on occasions, internationally.

Who We Are Looking For

As well as being closely involved in the day-to-day activities of the functions, the role holder will work closely with operational colleagues within CSIC, to provide proactive specialist advice and support across key functions of the organisation including projects & programmes, finance and accounting, corporate governance, information & process governance, contracts and legal, health and safety, premises and administrative services.

Applicants must demonstrate:

  • Degree or equivalent OR professional qualification in a relevant discipline.
  • Significant experience at a senior level leading finance or commercial functions 
  • Experience leading the operational support functions for an organisation or department
  • Experience in managing business monitoring, analysis and reporting
  • Proven track record of new business generation

Desirable attributes:

  • Relevant post-graduate level qualification
  • Experience of working in an economic development or innovation context
  • Experience of working in/with or knowledge of construction companies and/or the built environment sector
  • Experience of working with specific complex client groups such as Higher Education Institutions (HEI) and Further Education Colleges
