The Opportunity

The Centre for Social Research in Health is based in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at UNSW Sydney. The Centre has made major contributions to Australia’s response to hepatitis C, HIV and sexual health. With 34 staff (16 academic staff, 10 research officers and 8 professional staff shared jointly with the Social Policy Research Centre), the Centre is highly regarded for the quality of the research undertaken, its multidisciplinary approach, and its engagement with communities most affected by blood borne viruses. The work of the Centre informs policy and practice both nationally and internationally.

The Research Fellow position requires expertise in qualitative inquiry, critical social science, and applying social theory (for example science and technology studies, post structural theory, feminist science studies, and more-than-human approaches).The primary focus of the two year position is to work with ‘Evidence-Making Intervention’ program leaders Professor Tim Rhodes and Dr Kari Lancaster to develop and undertake qualitative research, including: research design; concept development; literature reviews; managing research ethics; liaison with research, policy and community project partners; data generation (e.g. interviews and ethnography); data coding, management and analyses; and writing scholarly outputs for conference presentations and publications (both as lead and co-author on research publications).

  • Salary: $107,210- $126,386 + 9.5% superannuation & Annual Leave loading
  • 22 mth fixed term contract 
  • Full time- 35hr/per week 
  • Location: Kensington Campus – Sydney, Australia

RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Ensure all UNSW, Faculty and Centre policies, procedures and codes of practice are adhered to at all times
  • Plan and complete day-to-day research activities within the framework of agreed project timelines and responsibilities as directed by Professor Tim Rhodes and Dr Kari Lancaster
  • Contribute to the development of grant applications for externally funded qualitative and social science research
  • Undertake qualitative and/or ethnographic research, including day-to-day project management, data generation, data coding, and data analysis
  • Undertake and synthesise literature reviews, including literature pertaining to social science methods and theory
  • Contribute to the writing of papers for peer reviewed publication (both as lead author and co-author), and to presentations at national and/or international conferences
  • Assist in the management of research ethics and governance
  • Assist with the organisation of events/seminars and to project dissemination and profile
  • Liaise with research, policy and community project partners, within and beyond UNSW
  • Cooperate with health, safety and other policies and procedures of the university
