About the opportunity 

The Sydney School of Education and Social Work (SSESW) is a national and international leader in Education, Social Work and Social Policy, committed to: excellence in professional education; rigorous research-informed and theoretical understanding of the social, political and cultural contexts of education, social work and social policy; and, informed and critical engagement with theory, policy and practice in ways designed to transform communities and individual lives in socially just ways. The SSESW seeks to appoint a lecturer in the area of Primary English. The School has strong undergraduate and graduate entry programs across primary education. The successful applicant will teach within the BEd (Primary) and MTeach (Primary) programs in the School, supervise professional experience in schools, engage in supervision of students including those undertaking research projects within their degrees, honours and higher degrees and actively contribute to the ongoing development of the research profile of the School.

About you

As the successful applicant you will:

  • Design, teach, assess and coordinate undergraduate and postgraduate preservice units of study and contribute to innovation in the design and delivery of award and non-award programs.
  • Contribute to student research supervision, including research higher degree students.
  • Actively contribute to the ongoing development of the research profile of the School, including the pursuit of research grants and regular publication in journals of high standing.
  • Mentor student professional experience placements.
  • Work collaboratively in a collegial team within and across programs
  • Contribute to academic administration and the collaborative programs in the School.

To ensure your success in this role you will need: 

  • A PhD (completed or submitted for examination) relevant to Primary English and literacy.  Consideration may be given to exceptional applicants who are currently close to the completion of their dissertation.
  • Knowledge of current theory and practice of English and literacy learning and interest in future developments.
  • A critically informed perspective on current theory and practice around classroom pedagogies
  • Relevant teaching experience with primary aged children
  • Relevant tertiary teaching experience with the ability to further develop teaching expertise
  • Ability and willingness to incorporate technology into the design and delivery of learning and teaching.
  • A demonstrated research trajectory in the field including an emerging record of research and publication.
  • Evidence of success in teaching on undergraduate teacher education programs.
  • Team work skills and the ability and willingness to contribute to professional and community collaborations and academic administration. 
  • Capability in mentoring professional experience placements across a range of settings.

It is desirable that you demonstrate:

  • Evidence of understanding of the Australian curriculum and the New South Wales education system.
  • Evidence of adaptive teaching for diverse learners based on disciplinary expertise in K-6 English
  • Expertise in innovative use of multimodal texts with digital technologies in teaching and learning
