The Faculty of Education

HKU has been involved in teacher education since 1917, and the Faculty of Education was established in 1984.  The Faculty of Education is forward-looking and world leading, ranking the fourth globally in Education (THE 2019).  It has assumed an important role in educational research and professional training and has contributed significantly to education policy and development in Hong Kong.  It is a major teacher-education institution and has strong expertise in policy analysis and curriculum development.  It was the first institution in Hong Kong to train speech therapists and audiologists for the local community. The Position

Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Social Data Science in the Faculty of Education (Ref.: 498993), to commence on September 1, 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract.  An exceptionally outstanding candidate at the Associate Professor level may be considered for appointment on tenure terms.

The importance of data technology, data analytics, and data services has been emphasized in our rapidly changing society. The application of social informatics and data science is necessary across industries and research in social sciences. Social data science takes an interdisciplinary approach, integrating information science, computer science, mathematics, statistics, data science, and social sciences to address issues or challenges in various social contexts.

Applicants should possess (i) a Ph.D. degree in Data Science / Social Statistical Analysis or a related field; (ii) tertiary teaching experience; and (iii) a proven track record in, or strong potential for, research, scholarly publications and competitive external funding. Knowledge of the local context would be an advantage.

The appointee will be expected to teach courses offered in the newly launched Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Social Data Science, which is a collaboration programme among the Faculties of Education, Social Sciences and Science, and other undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, supervise research postgraduate students, contribute actively to research and knowledge exchange, and undertake service/administrative responsibilities as appropriate. The Faculty anticipates that the appointee will help bring new research initiatives and opportunities for the Faculty and the University to make further impact through rigorous research in Social Data Science.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
