About our Team          

In Dubai we have the largest branch campus of any international university and we were awarded 5 star rating by the Dubai Government (KHDA), one of only three universities to achieve this level. We were also named as the best university in the Middle East by Forbes magazine in 2019.

The School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences has been teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate Computer Science programmes at our Dubai Campus since it opened in 2005. In 2020 the school plans to introduce one of our Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics programmes, the BSc Statistical Data Science, which has been formally approved for delivery in Dubai, having already been offered in Edinburgh and Malaysia for some years. This will necessitate the recruitment of additional staff, starting with a senior staff member with expertise in statistics to lead the development and delivery of this new programme, in close collaboration with colleagues at both the Dubai and Edinburgh campuses.

Detailed Description          

We are expanding our portfolio of teaching at our Dubai campus and we require an Associate Professor to lead the development of this new programme, starting no later than April 2020.  As well as leading and developing the new programme the Associate Professor will also be expected to deliver and assess a range of undergraduate statistics / data science courses at the University’s Dubai Campus. In addition, this position will require the undertaking of administrative duties, involvement in student recruitment activities and the supervision of student projects and dissertations. An interest and background in statistical research either in academia or in industry would be desirable. The successful applicant will hold a postgraduate degree in statistics, data science or a closely related discipline. Previous teaching and leadership experience is essential.

Key duties and responsibilities          

The successful applicant will be responsible for:

  • Leading the introduction of our Statistical Data Science BSc to our Dubai campus
  • The delivery and assessment of undergraduate courses in statistics / data science subjects
  • Supervision of projects and dissertations
  • Student recruitment and admissions activities
  • Administrative duties
  • Involvement in the recruitment of further staff to support the development of the programme.

Education, qualifications and experience           ·         

  • PhD or equivalent in Statistics, Statistical Data Science, or a closely related discipline. (Essential).
  • Relevant leadership and teaching experience at H.E. level (Essential).
  • Ability to teach and supervise topics in a wide range of statistics / data science subjects (Essential).
  • Excellent spoken, written and understanding of English (Essential).
  • Relevant team-working and interpersonal skills (Essential).
  • The ability to work flexibly and carry out teaching activities in the evenings and weekends (Essential).
  • Evidence of scholarship and/or research in statistics / data science (Desirable).
  • Experience of working at a British university or experience of delivering British university programmes in other countries (Desirable).
  • An ability to identify and develop opportunities for personal and collective research (Desirable).
  • The ability to take up the appointment April 2020 (Desirable).
