Applications are invited for the position of Postdoctoral Research Assistant funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council on the project ‘The Historic Case of the Separation of Middle Eastern Jewish Children from their Families in Israel’ (AH/S012982/1) coordinated by Dr. James Eastwood (QMUL; Principal Investigator). The position is based at the Mile End campus of QMUL.

Post Information and Requirements
An opportunity has arisen for a part-time (0.3 FTE, 1-2 days a week, 9 month fixed-term) Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work on the Arts and Humanities Research Council funded project, ‘The Historic Case of the Separation of Middle Eastern Jewish Children from their Families in Israel’ (AH/S012982/1) which aims to investigate the history and politics of the forced removal of children from families of Yemenite, Middle Eastern, North African, and Balkan origin in Israel during the 1940s and 50s. The project will also compare these forced removals with similar occurrences in the context of settler colonialism in the United States, Canada, and Australia. This project is led by Dr. James Eastwood at Queen Mary University of London.
The Postdoctoral Research Assistant will work closely with the project lead in the identification and analysis of relevant archival material and secondary literature, and will have the opportunity to develop their qualitative research skills. The successful candidate will undertake a range of tasks which will principally include literature searches, the sifting and cataloguing of archival material, translation, and transcription. They will have a fluency in English and Hebrew.
An interest in and knowledge of Israeli history and politics, particularly as it relates to immigration from the Middle East and North Africa, is essential for this role. Experience of working with archival material, and an interest and knowledge of the comparative study of race and settler colonialism, would also be desirable.
This is a fixed term appointment from 1st January 2020 until 1st October 2020.
Salary will be £34,220 per annum pro rata (Grade 4) inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days pro rata annual leave, occupational pension scheme and an interest-free season ticket loan.
