Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in Assessment (Learning Sciences & Technologies Academic Group)

The Learning Sciences & Technologies Academic Group (LST) at the National Institute of Education in Singapore invites applications with an earned doctorate and/or research portfolio in assessment for tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position.

LST is an interdisciplinary academic group that focuses on understanding learning and assessment from multiple perspectives, from individual level to learning in social-cultural contexts, with the ultimate goal of enhancing and ensuring educative outcomes for all learners. Our mission is to enable learners to become designers for learning and teaching and active contributors in a reflective community of practice.  The group is concerned with the relationships between theory and practice and adopts a variety of methodologies, including experimental studies, reflection-in-action, action research, design experiments and ethnography for the advancement of its research and teaching. We grapple with the tensions and the nexus between learning, assessment and instructional design, and to mediate the design process as both a science and an art. Currently, we offer courses for initial teacher education, as well as graduate programmes such as the Master of Arts (Instructional Design and Technologies), Master of Education (Learning Sciences and Technologies), Master of Arts in Professional Education (Training and Development), Doctor of Education (Technology-Mediated Learning Environments) and Doctor of Philosophy (Education). Also in the pipeline, we are developing the latest programme, Master of Science in Science of Learning and Design (MSoLD). The candidate would play an active role in some or all of these programmes. Applicants who are prepared to understand, support, and work with colleagues on assessment issues in common or new expertise areas are valued. Working across disciplinary and discursive interests is encouraged. 

Successful applicants will actively initiate and/or participate in research examining a wide range of assessment issues such school-based assessment, assessment for learning, and technology-enabled assessment,  both within and beyond the Singapore educational system. They will work with a team of faculty to develop and teach courses, and pioneer changes in assessment policy and practices in schools. They will also contribute to services at the departmental, institutional, national and international levels.  A keen and updated awareness of technological/social/global effects on the epistemology and ontology of assessment is important. Workplace experience in educational settings inclusive of schools is preferred.

• Indicators of ability to secure and manage competitive grants
• An emerging record of publications in reputable peer-reviewed, international journals
• Evidence of excellence in teaching, and assessment practice
• A developing international network of scholarly collaborators
• Excellent communication (verbal and written English)
• Willingness to understand and support the work of colleagues beyond one’s niche expertise

Additional Requirements for Associate Professor

• Evidence of specialization and expertise in a specific area of research relevant to assessment
• Demonstrated success in securing and managing competitive grants
• Strong, established track-record of publication in high-impact journals
• Demonstration of impact of scholarship through recognized means and metrics
• Successful supervision to completion of PhD/EdD students
• Evidence of providing mentorship to junior faculty members
• An international network of scholarly collaborators

• Record of success in providing professional development and strategic collaboration in schools

Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be expected to:

• Conceptualize, design, implement and sustain a productive assessment research program
• Teach existing and new courses in initial teacher education, executive and graduate programmes
• Supervise initial teacher education and/or graduate students
• Publish research in reputable journals or other outlets as is customary in his/her field
• Establish professional connections with local and international researchers and practitioners in the specific expertise area
• Share expertise with NIE colleagues through various platforms
