Seeking a Researcher to join a newly-funded project group which aims to identify new opportunities for wheat improvement through manipulation of stomatal traits to enhance water use efficiency

This position has been created as a part of a newly-funded International Wheat Yield Partnership (IWYP) & Grains and Research Development Corporation (GRDC) project. The project aims to identify new opportunities for wheat improvement through manipulation of stomatal traits to enhance water use efficiency. The broad scope of this position is to screen bread wheat TILLING and transgenic lines which have altered stomata characteristics in both controlled and field conditions. The project will require some time to be spent at the University of Sydney to select appropriate Australian TILLING mutants for screening, and this position will be responsible for coordinating with laboratories in Canada and the UK who are taking part in the larger IWYP project.

This position works independently under the broad supervision of A/Prof Stuart Roy and Dr Penny Tricker, and will have support from a technical officer(s) employed on the project. The position will work closely with a GM compliance officer and the University of Adelaide’s Institutional Biosafety Committee to set up GM field trials and to oversee GM compliance. Additional support may be available from technical officers / research assistants and other Chief Investigators on the IWYP project (AAFC, Canada: Dr Nora Foroud; University of Essex: Prof Tracy Lawson & Prof Christine Raines). It is expected that the successful candidate will provide support, advice, and as required, training to students and other staff in the University.

To be successful you will need:

• A PhD in the area of plant biology with relevant experience and/or training
• A demonstrated knowledge of, or experience in stomatal physiology and water relation
• Project management experience across molecular genetics, physiology and/or genetics projects
• Ability to conduct independent and innovative research of a high quality with a track record of publication in internationally recognised scientific journal
• Demonstrated ability and willingness to be involved in the supervision of undergraduate and higher degree students
