The Role

The Department of Psychology at Macquarie University is currently seeking a suitably qualified Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join a multidisciplinary team working on a Defence Sciences and Technology funded grant project exploring the effects of at-sea deployment on Navy personnel. Across three years the team will be working to understand the effects of at-sea deployment on a range of outcomes including cognitive performance, job performance, chronic stress and resilience. We will be seeking to identify the major job demands contributing to reductions in these outcomes as well as the job and personal resources sustaining resilience. The project is anticipated to have important implications for Navy policy and job design. The successful applicant will work with Dr Monique Crane, as well as with other lead researchers on the grant.

The Candidate should be available to start by 13th January 2019.

Specifically, the post-doctoral researcher will:

  • Contribute to the development of ethics submissions
  • Contribute to scale development and validation
  • Develop their own research questions related to the overarching grant objectives
  • Assist with the conduct of interviews with Navy personnel in Perth and Sydney
  • Analysis of interview data
  • Administration of longitudinal data collection including cognitive assessments. This may involve domestic and international travel and on board Navy vessels.
  • Analysis of cross-sectional and longitudinal data for publication
  • Manuscript drafting for peer review
  • Assisting with drafting reports for stakeholders

About You

By the time of employment, you will have completed a PhD in Psychology or a related field and have an interest in military psychology or psychological resilience. You are expected to have excellent written and oral communication skills, and ability to liaise with internal and external stakeholders at all levels. You will have strong research skills preferably including experience in the analysis of qualitative data; longitudinal data (e.g., multi-level modelling, latent growth modelling); and/or network analysis. Ideally you have human subjects research experience and are willing and able to collect data at sea aboard a Navy ship.

  • PhD in Psychology or a related field.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity in the workplace.


  • An interest in military psychology or psychological resilience.
