Role Description

Cranfield is an exclusively postgraduate university that is a global leader for education and transformational research in technology and management.

A part of the university’s Aerospace Theme, the Centre of Aeronautics (CoA) is one of the world’s largest centres of postgraduate education and research in aeronautics, with over 200 MSc and PhD students.  Amongst its programmes, the Centre delivers the world-renowned MSc courses in Aerospace Vehicle Design (AVD) and Aerospace Dynamics (AD) which recently celebrated their 70th anniversary. CoA consists of four groups, including, Aircraft Design, Applied Aerodynamics, Dynamics, Simulation & Control and Advanced Engineering Design.

Reporting to the Head of Centre for Aeronautics, we are looking to appoint a Professor in Aerodynamics.  You will be a thought leader in the field of aerodynamics and will lead a Group with an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research.

As a senior member of staff, you will collaborate with colleagues specialising in aerodynamics, flight dynamics, flight simulation, aircraft design, and air traffic/flow management, amongst others. You will have access to University facilities, including the National Flying Laboratory Centre, and the world-leading Aerospace Integration Research Centre, amongst others.

You will lead the Applied Aerodynamics group and its research activities in the Centre of Excellence in Aeronautics, including the management and further development of our (national) wind tunnel facilities. An internationally recognised researcher and a thought leader, you will have a strong background in theoretical and applied aerodynamics, and also a proven ability in winning research funding in the field.

You will have a PhD or equivalent in aerodynamics, as well as experience in providing outstanding leadership of a research group or team. Reflecting that this position is leading a Group with a major international reputation, you will also have an outstanding world-class track record of research in aeronautics, evidenced by high-profile publications in the top peer reviewed journals, research reports and successful engineering projects.

For an informal discussion, please contact Professor Howard Smith, Acting Head of Centre for Aeronautics and Professor of Aircraft Design on +44 (0)1234 75 8387 or (E); Howard.Smith@cranfield.ac.uk

At Cranfield, we value Diversity and Inclusion, and aim to create and maintain a culture in which everyone can work and study together harmoniously with dignity and respect and realise their full potential. We actively consider flexible working options such as part-time, compressed or flexible hours and/or an element of homeworking, and commit to exploring the possibilities for each role.
