PhD position within reduction of emissions from hydrocarbon production through alternative and energy efficient drainage strategies

About the position

A three-year PhD scholarship is available in the LowEmission research centre for petroleum activities (, a SINTEF led research center for reducing emissions in the oil and gas industry. The PhD position is organized within the group Reservoir engineering and petrophysics at the Department of Geoscience and Petroleum, NTNU.

This PhD project is an interdisciplinary initiative between NTNU and SINTEF. The PhD student is assigned to the Department of Geoscience and Petroleum at NTNU, but the PhD candidate is expected to spend considerable time at the Department of Oil and Gas of SINTEF Industry. The candidate is supervised by Associate Prof. Carl Fredrik Berg from the Department of Geoscience and Petroleum, and Research Scientist Per Bergmo from SINTEF Industry will act as co-supervisor.

Start-update is expected to be Q1 2020.

The position reports to Head of Department

Main duties and responsibilities

  • The research of this PhD position is in the area of large scale modeling and simulation of transport in porous media.
  • The focus is to improve the methodology and guidelines for accounting of energy use and costs in offshore hydrocarbon production and to quantify reductions in energy use by applying alternative drainage strategies and/or EOR methods.
  • Existing open-source optimization tools will be modified to enable minimization of energy use, in addition to the current focus of maximized oil recovery.

Qualification requirements

PhD candidate:

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in petroleum engineering, physics, mathematics or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

Other qualifications

  • The candidate is expected to have background in reservoir simulation. Prior knowledge with software such as OPM Flow, Eclipse, MRST and ResInsight is advantageous. Further, programming background, e.g. in C++ and Python, is also advantageous.
  • Excellent written and oral English. Norwegian language skills is advantageous, but not required.

We offer

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 479 600 before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years (without required duties). Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in engineering ( 

As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
