Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine
Centre for Environmental and Preventive Medicine
Animator/Research Assistant 0.5FTE

This post sits within the Wolfson Institute, Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, part of Queen Mary University of London and works closely with clinicians from the Barts Heart Centre. The SMD is a leading medical and dental school that offers international levels of excellence in research and teaching and  Barts Health NHS Trust is one the largest clinical facilities in Europe.

This post offers a suitably trained and motivated individual an exciting opportunity to use design and animation skills for patient benefit.

Working closely with clinicians, the post-holder will research, develop and design animations that explain medical and surgical procedures to a multicultural audience. Animations have already been developed for cardiac procedures (www.explainmyprocedure.com) and the plan is now to expand this across medical and surgical specialties. The successful applicant will join a team of doctors and animators to help develop, design, and introduce a portfolio of animations to support patient understanding before consent.

This is an exciting and unusual opportunity to create novel ways of communicating scientific and medical concepts through design and animation to produce media that will be immediately used in medical practice. There will also be an opportunity to learn cross-disciplinary skills in a leading research institute. Creativity, knowledge of design/animation software, excellent communication skills and an interest in medicine/science are essential requirements.

The post-holder will be skilled in graphic design, animation, ideally both 2-D and 3-D, and will work closely with medical practitioners across QMUL and Barts Health NHS Trust including David Wald, Professor of Cardiology who will lead the project. Please include a link to your showreel, if you have one , in your application.

The successful candidate will be appointed part-time (0.5FTE) for 1 year in the first instance. The salary will be pro rata in the range £31,613 – 35,144 (including London weighting). Working hours will usually be 9am to 5pm, although some flexibility may be required. The benefits package includes pro-rata 30 days annual leave (pro rata) plus 4 College closure days and a pension scheme.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.

Informal enquiries about this post can be made to David Wald on d.s.wald@qmul.ac.uk or 020 7882 6298.

Application enquiries should be directed to Charterhouse Square Recruitment at recruitment@qmul.ac.uk.

The closing date for the applications is midnight (GMT) on 17 November 2019.
