Professor / Associate Professor / Assistant Professor (PR0145/19-20)

The Department of English Language and Literature of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) is currently inviting applications for two appointments at the open rank of Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor.

Appointees should possess (1) a PhD in English or a closely-related discipline; (2) an active, impact-bearing research programme including evidence of (or potential for) successfully granted research funded from public and/or private sources; (3) documented evidence of excellence in teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels; and (4) a proven (or potential) track record of administrative innovation. Candidates possessing credible experience in curriculum development and student-centered pedagogy, promoting promising ties with potential collaborating institutions, and building capacity to nurture academic leadership and well-being within the Department and the Faculty of Arts more broadly will be most actively considered.

Appointees should preferably demonstrate in-depth expertise in at least one of the following areas: Linguistics, English Literature and Comparative Studies, and Interdisciplinary Studies.

Linguistics

The appointee is expected to teach a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses with expertise in at least two of the following areas: (a) World Englishes with a particular focus upon Asian varieties; (b) corpus construction and research; (c) L1/L2 acquisition; (d) grammar and syntax; (e) morphology; and (f) sociolinguistics.

English Literature and Comparative Studies

The appointee is expected to teach a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses with expertise in at least two of the following areas: (a) canonical literatures in English; (b) gender and literature; (c) cross- and intercultural literary studies; (d) literary theory; (e) modern/contemporary literature; (f) world literature; (g) Chinese-Western literary relations; and (h) theories in comparative literature.

Interdisciplinary Studies

The appointee is expected to teach a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses with expertise in at least two of the following areas: (a) digital humanities; (b) Hong Kong Studies; and (c) well-being, ethics, and the public good.

Faculty and students engage members of the academic community in pursuit of transformative teaching and innovative research; the work of the Department is also expected to make meaningful and measurable impact on the community beyond the campus. Adhering to the purpose of the greater good, the Department of English Language and Literature is fully committed to the distinctive and creative dissemination of knowledge, particularly regarding the comparative and intercultural dimensions of English studies in local and global contexts.

This is a tenure-track appointment commencing not later than 1 September 2020.

Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
