Background and Role

The NEX project is seeking to recruit a Postdoctoral Researcher for the trial phase of an innovative health and social care home monitoring project. The DCU collaboration are working in partnership with industry partners Davra, Danalto and Intel. The project will be executed over a 36-month period and the overall approach and methodology of the project will follow a cyclical approach. In the initial phase, a user needs and requirements study will be carried out with older adult patients/citizens and health and social care professionals. This phase will ensure the development of systems that blend user needs with technology advancement. The findings will inform the design and development of the monitoring system which will be validated in a lab environment and tested in a friendly trial. Ethics approval will be obtained for conduct of action research cycles at scale with opportunities to feed back into design and development activities. This exciting project has the capacity to contribute positively to health and social care service provision for older adults living at home.

The Postdoctoral Researcher will be based in the CeIC and will report to the Principal Investigator in the School of Health and Human Performance. Fieldwork will be undertaken at participating health and social care locations and in participant’s homes.

Principal duties and responsibilities

Reporting to his/her Principal Investigator the Postdoctoral Researcher will;

  • Conduct a specified programme of research under the supervision and direction of the Principal Investigator.
  • Assist in the preparation of ethical approval documentation for the various phases of the project.
  • Assist the PI and research group in the development and coordination of user needs requirement gathering, survey and measurement instrument design, implementing the friendly and action research trials, data collection and analysis.
  • Engage in the dissemination of the results of the research in which he/she is engaged, with the support of and under the supervision of the Principal Investigator.
  • Engage with both internal and external stakeholders including academic and industry partners/collaborators as appropriate.
  • Substantially contribute to the identification of external funding sources and assist in the writing of future grant proposals.
  • Mentor, assist and supervise postgraduate research students and junior research staff as required.
  • Carry out administrative work associated with the programme of research as necessary.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant area such as psychology, nursing, social science, health services research, allied health disciplines or related disciplines relevant to the research topic. It is essential that the applicant has experience in health or social care research and experience in conducting research in a clinical environment including recruiting patients/citizens and liaising with health and social care personnel. Excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills, being able to take initiative and work under pressure to tight deadlines and the ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team are also required. In addition, it is essential that the candidate has well-developed qualitative and quantitative research skills with a publication track record. It is desirable that the applicant has experience of information and communication technology research in health and social care.

Discipline knowledge and research skills – Demonstrates the ability to design and implement part of a programme of research with particular reference to conducting information and communication technology trials in a health or social care environment.

Communication skills – Demonstrates the ability to communicate their research effectively to the research community and wider society.

Understanding the Research Environment– Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the research environment both nationally and internationally and the ability to contribute substantially to grant applications.

Managing and leadership skills –Successfully manages health/ICT related research projects including the management and supervision of postgraduates and/or junior research staff.

Mandatory Training

The post holder will be required to undertake the following mandatory compliance training: GDPR and compliance. Other training may need to be undertaken when required.

Salary Scale: The salary for this role is up to point 5 on the Postdoctoral Researcher Scale (Level 2) i.e. €42,559

* Appointments will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be made on the appropriate point of the salary scales, in line with current Government pay policy.
