We have a vacancy for a PhD position in Onboard/embedded data processing in dedicated small satellite missions and autonomous systems

PhD fellowship in Onboard/embedded data processing in dedicated small satellite missions and autonomous systems is available at the NTNU IES. The successful candidate will be offered up to a 4-year position with 25% work assignments for the Department. The work place will be Trondheim.

Main duties and responsibilities

The PhD-position within the onboard/embedded data processing framework for small satellite technology is linked to the strategic strengthening of small satellite research area at IE faculty at NTNU. The position will focus on onboard processing of high-dimensional remotely sensed data streams produced by various sensors on satellite platforms in order to significantly reduce the amount of required bandwidth and storage and on real-time realizations of cost-effective techniques for information extraction and data mining. The position will also be linked to and develop within the ongoing project Mission-oriented autonomous systems with small satellites for maritime sensing, surveillance and communication (MASSIVE) at NTNU.

Qualification requirements

We seek a highly motivated individual who has strong background in electrical engineering, computer science, or other relevant disciplines. The candidate must document experience/knowledge in at least one of the following fields: embedded systems design, high performance reconfigurable computing, energy-efficient computing and/or hardware/software design development. Candidates with a strong background in hyperspectral imaging will be also considered. The candidate must be able to work well in a team and quickly acquire knowledge in new topics.

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

Applicants should provide evidence of good written and spoken English language skills. The following tests can be used as documentation: TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE), or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are: TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test), IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted), CAE/CPE: grade B or A.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

The research of this project has civilian objectives. However, equipment restricted by export licenses and ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) is being used in this research area. Applicants that are citizens of Norway, NATO countries, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, or Sweden are eligible. Other applicants should provide evidence of eligibility to use such equipment for their application to be considered.

Salary and conditions

PhD candidate:

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 479 600 before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 4 years (with required duties). Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in Electronics and Telecommunications (https://www.ntnu.no/studier/phet).
As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.
