Researcher in Facial Appearance Modelling
About the position
The Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (http://www.ntnu.edu/ie) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has a vacancy for a 100 % position as a Researcher at the Department of Computer Science (IDI) (http://www.ntnu.edu/idi).The position is hosted at the Norwegian Colour and Visual Computing Laboratory (Colourlab) (http://www.colourlab.no), Gjøvik, and financed under the project "Spectral Skin Modelling and Rendering for Realistic Digital Faces" (Spectraskin).
The Spectraskin project aims at increasing the photo-realism of digital faces in movies and video games, by developing new skin appearance models for computer graphics applications and devising novel techniques to estimate skin chromophores from images. The project is led by Dr. Giuseppe Claudio Guarnera at NTNU, in collaboration with experts at Imperial College London and at The University of York (United Kingdom).
The position reports to Head of Department
Main duties and responsibilities
- One of the main goals of the Spectraskin project is to device a new skin appearance model.
- The successful candidate will support the work in this direction by implementing novel image-based technique to remap skin appearance across different models and tools, both already existing in the state of the art and implemented by other members of the team.
The successful candidate will also work on the modelling and rendering of facial geometry, in both static and dynamic conditions (e.g. facial expressions).
The successful candidate is expected to ensure the validity and reliability of data at all times, to maintain accurate and complete records of all findings and to assist with the writing of reports to the Research Council of Norway.
For this position the applicant must have:
- Ph.D. in Computer Science or Computer Graphics.
- At least 18 months of documented research experience after completion of PhD (e.g. as a postdoctoral researcher or equivalent experience).
- Strong background and interest in reflectance models / materials appearance for computer graphics.
- Prior experience in material appearance remapping techniques for computer graphics and 3D modelling techniques / tools.
- Experience in writing and contributing to the publication of academic papers in the main computer graphics conferences and journals.
- Fluency in English, with excellent written and oral communication skills. Applicants who neither are native English speakers nor from Scandinavia, must provide evidence of English language proficiency by means of one of the following tests: TOEFL, Academic IELTS and Cambridge CAE or CPE. Minimum scores need to be:
- TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)
- IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)
- CAE/CPE: grade B or A.
In some circumstances (typically, in the case of PhD thesis in English), formal documentation of language skills can be relinquished. In such cases, the candidate’s language skills will be assessed in a personal interview.

Salary and conditions
The gross salary for the position of researcher (code 1109) is normally remunerated at gross from NOK 523.200 – 627.700 before tax per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The appointment is for a term of 18 months.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
