Job description

A 2.5-year part-time (45%) position as researcher is open at the MetOs section of the Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo. The position is tied to the KeyClim project funded by the Research Council of Norway.

Preferred starting date 01.02.2020.

In KeyClim the Norwegian Earth System Model NorESM is being improved and used for studies of climate scenarios with an emphasis on high-latitude regions.

The work of this project will focus on the improvement of NorESM’s parametrization of mesoscale eddy transport in the ocean with particular focus on effects of bottom topography and sea ice, both elements that are presently unaccounted for in NorESM as well as other global models.

The researcher will collaborate with a team of project scientists stationed both in Oslo (Univ. of Oslo, Met Norway) and Bergen (Univ. of Bergen, NORCE) and will approach the topic with a combination of theoretical analysis, idealized modeling and implementation an testing in NorESM. About 5% of the work will also be tied to paleo-oceanographic modeling with UiO’s Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics (CEED).

Qualification requirements

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates will be selected in accordance with this, and are expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

The following formal qualifications are required:

  • Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in dynamical meteorology or oceanography. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Only applicants with an approved doctoral thesis and public defense are eligible for appointment.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.

The following qualifications will also count in the assessment of the applicants:

  • A keen interest in geophysical fluid dynamics and, in particular, the dynamics of mesoscale eddies and eddy transport.
  • Prior experience with numerical ocean models and preferably also coupled climate models.
  • The ability and interest in working both independently and within a diverse research group.
