We are seeking a suitably qualified postdoctoral fellow to work on a project, entitled “Unveiling the fine structure of the Australian continent using ocean waves” funded by The ARC Discovery Program, which is hosted at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences of Macquarie University.
This project aims to develop innovative methods using ubiquitous noise from ocean waves to image the fine-scale lithospheric structures of Australia from the surface to the upper mantle. These images will help us to better understand Australia’s crust and mantle and their tectonic evolution and dynamics, to better target large-scale Earth resources, and to improve the assessment of seismic and volcanic hazards in Australia.
The Postdoctoral Research is expected to work with A/Prof. Yingjie Yang to develop and apply innovative seismic imaging methods to map fine-scale structures of lithosphere and asthenosphere of Australia. The successful applicant will have extensive expertise in seismic data processing, code programming, and adjoint tomography method development. They will contribute to developing, testing and benchmarking new processing codes of ambient noise processing, and developing an ambient noise adjoint tomography method for broadband surface waves.
Within the Faculty of Science and Engineering, the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences is unique in the diversity and inter-connectivity of the individual research strands that cross conventional sub-discipline boundaries. We take a four dimensional Earth systems approach that exploits geological settings, advances in instrumentation and modelling to understand processes from a fundamental, mechanistic perspective. Our program was ranked in the top 50 international programs in Earth and Marine Science by QS University in 2016
