Position Focus:

Under the general direction of the histology manager, manage the day-to-day activities of the Histology laboratory and supervise staff within the Department of Histology. Performs a comprehensive range of routine and specials stains on patient samples. Responsible for all technical aspects in the histology clinical section, regulatory compliance to include safety, scheduling and performance management. Performs the following duties:

  • Supervise workflow and delegate responsibility for laboratory functions.
  • Orient and train staff members. Monitor work progress and evaluate performance.
  • Manage time and attendance records, including scheduling time off ensuring appropriate coverage is provided and within budgeted hours.
  • Authorize overtime as needed.
  • Develop and evaluate new techniques in staining and tissue processing.
  • Provides instruction and guidance in areas of quality control.
  • Keeps abreast of current histology practices and procedures.
  • Maintains that quality tissue specimen slides and stain results are obtained and delivered to the Pathologist within established quality standards.
  • Displays ability to modify and or change staining procedures as necessary. Updates procedures relates all changes to the medical director.
  • Monitors surgical and autopsy specimens submitted to histology for quality, quantity and timeliness, and reports periodically to the director of pathology.
  • Documents and reviews with histotechnician any quality issues.
  • Assist in the corrective action process.
  • Ensures compliance with all university and government regulations concerning health and safety.
  • Provides in service training to residents, fellows, hospital house staff, medical students, PA and histology students and technical staff to support the needs of both the clinical and research area.
  • Shows ability to handle unexpected situations and is able to exercise independent judgement and decision-making.
  • Observes and maintains patient confidentiality. Instructs first year residents on basic histology techniques.
  • Oversees maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment.
  • Continuously evaluate and initiates methods for achieving cost savings.
  • Oversees the operation of lab stock.
  • Familiar with the lab information system, particularly with the histology modules.

All other duties as requested or needed.

Essential Duties

  1. Supervises the day-to-day activities of support staff.
  2. Assesses and resolves or escalates problems arising within unit.
  3. Assists in the development of policies and procedures in support of unit.
  4. Assists in long-range planning for work unit needs.
  5. Participates in unit budget planning.
  6. Evaluates work requests to determine if they are appropriate to the unit or another area.
  7. Ensures that work flow is organized and staffed for quality efficient completion.
  8. Communicates deadlines and special circumstances to staff. 
  9. Maintains equipment and supplies for unit.
  10. Completes evaluations of direct report employees.
  11. Interacts with University personnel to define work assignments and requirements, communicate progress of work, and plan and coordinate projects.
  12. Interacts with external sources to coordinate work necessary to fulfill projects, keep abreast of new products and technologies, or arrange for subcontractors.
  13. Supervises a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Minimum requirement of Bachelor’s Degree in related field and three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Ability to evaluate the quality of stains and stain procedures for quality. Working knowledge of Enzyme Histochemistry as well as basic histochemistry.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to lead and direct a technical team while consistently demonstrating the values of integrity, patient-centered care, and respect.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Ability to assist department in needed areas during periods of unusually high workloads and staff absences.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to recognize unexpected results and take appropriate action.

Required Licenses or Certifications

HT/HTL (ASCP) required.

Physical Requirements

Ability to do extended amounts of time sitting at a microtome or using a computer terminal, participate in repetitive arm rotary action, tolerate sensory exposure to various organic solvents, and lift up to 50 lbs. maximum with frequent lifting and / or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
