Applications are invited for appointment as Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Big Data in Environment and Climate Science in the Research Division for Mathematical and Statistical Science (Ref.: 498769), to commence as soon as possible, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract.  Direct tenure may be offered to outstanding candidates for Associate Professor position.

The Research Division for Mathematical and Statistical Science is one of the six Research Divisions in the Faculty of Science.  It covers pure and applied mathematics, statistics and actuarial science.  It has strengths in geometry, number theory, optimisation theory, stochastic analysis and biostatistics with key expertise in actuarial science, time series, survival analysis, complex geometry, analytic number theory and optimisation.

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Computational Biology or related disciplines.  They should be able to demonstrate excellence in research in large environmental data, big data in climate science (e.g. air pollution, global warming), spatial statistics, predictive modeling, artificial intelligence and cloud computing etc.  The appointee will be hosted in Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science and will work with biologists, earth scientists, climate scientists and marine scientists on interdisciplinary research related to environmental data.  The teaching duties will be assigned by the Head of Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science with a reduced teaching load in the first two years of appointment.  Enquiries about the post should be sent to the Head of Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.  At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.  The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary.  A start-up package that is commensurate with the needs and experience of the candidate will be provided.  Housing benefits will also be provided as applicable.
