  • Opportunity to be part of a grant-funded research project using new CRISPR technologies.
  • Full-time, fixed term, 3-year contract. Base salary: $94k-$114k p.a. (Level A6-B3) plus annual leave loading and a generous 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation.

About the opportunity

We are inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the John and Anne Chong Lab for Functional Genomics lead by Associate Professor Greg Neely. The position will be based within the Charles Perkins Centre at University of Sydney, a rich academic environment focused on a multidisciplinary approach to improving human health as we age.

The University of Sydney Faculty of Science, Charles Perkins Center, and the John and Anne Chong Lab for Functional Genomics are investing in new applications of CRISPR genome editing to promote rapid progress in basic or medical research. The current position involves applying existing or developing new genome editing technologies to neuroscience with some focus on pain biology. The successful candidate will learn and apply various model systems in the lab, including fruit flies, mice, and/or human ES cells and stem cell-derived organoids combined with high throughput or candidate genome editing. The successful candidate will both drive new creative projects and help finish and publish existing research projects ongoing in the lab. Some of the available projects include new regulators of ageing, cognitive function, cell death, and pain perception. While the successful candidate will receive training in grant writing and encouraged to submit grants, the position is funded for three years initially with the potential for renewal. Importantly there is adequate funding and freedom within the lab to allow the successful applicant to follow the project in any direction necessary, and this position is designed for a motivated individual driven to become an independent principal investigator in the next ~5 years.

  • cell culture experience optimally with human or mouse embryonic stem cells
  • experience in writing and publishing peer-reviewed articles, preparing and delivering oral research presentations.
  • ability to work confidently and independently to design appropriate experiments addressing the underlying research question
