Overview:

The Department of Biological and Experimental Psychology at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is seeking to recruit a Postdoctoral Researcher with expertise in the analysis of epigenetic and genetic data to work on existing data from a NIH-funded international study aimed at investigating the biological pathways of psychological risk and resilience in Syrian refugee children. It is well established that children exposed to war are at increased risk for the development of mental health problems. However, some children show remarkable psychological resilience. In order to better understand the biological underpinnings of resilience this longitudinal study explores the interplay between psychosocial, neuroendocrine, epigenetic (i.e., Illumina EPIC), and genetic (i.e., Illumina GSA) factors in more than 1,000 Syrian refugee children based in Lebanon across two time points.

The post holder will be based in London and work closely with, and under the supervision, of Prof Michael Pluess (Department of Biological and Experimental Psychology, QMUL) and Prof Vardhman Rakyan (Centre for Genomics and Child Health in the Blizard Institute, QMUL). The main role of the three-year full-time post includes data preparation and analysis of genome-wide methylation and genome-wide genetic data as well as writing up findings for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

We are looking for highly motivated and ambitious candidates, with several years of experience in the analysis of molecular data (PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a relevant field). The candidate should have experience working with (epi)genomics data as well as an understanding of basic epigenetics/genetics processes. The successful candidate will work in a world-class epigenetics research environment provided by the QMUL Epigenetics Hub http://www.blizard.qmul.ac.uk/epigenetics.html), along with exciting new cross-faculty QMUL initiatives in genomics and computational biology (http://www.qmul.ac.uk/lifesciences/).

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.

The position is full time and for 10 months. The salary will be in the range of £31,613 - £38,084 per annum. Salary will be according to qualifications, skills and experience. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.
