Overview:

The William Harvey Research Institute (WHRI) wishes to appoint a Research Physiotherapist in Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM). The successful candidate will be finishing, or have recently finished, a PhD OR have a relevant clinical qualification.

The main role will be delivery of the clinical and measurement aspects of a clinical trial of exercise therapy and iron supplementation for people with renal problems. Full training and support will be given by the academic and clinical teams led by Professor Dylan Morrissey and Dr Kieran McCafferty. We would welcome informal discussions and/or visits prior to application.

The successful applicant will have expertise in at last one area of sports and exercise medicine, sports and musculoskeletal physiotherapy, sports podiatry or sports science (e.g. exercise physiology, exercise as a health tool, biomechanics).

The successful candidate will also be expected, and supported, to develop academic activity in other areas such as small group teaching, paper writing, grant-writing and data collection. It is possible, but not mandatory, that some clinical practice will be included in the role. This will be varied according to the interests of the successful applicant and subject to a suitable reciprocal arrangement continuing with the trust physiotherapy department.

The continuation of the successful candidate’s existing research interests will be supported alongside student research supervision. The WHRI has particular strengths in SEM, education and three core WHRI research themes (cardiovascular, inflammation and endocrine; www.whri.qmul.ac.uk). SEM has a particular interest in clinical trials, systematic reviews and the link between movement and pathology, and has a fully equipped Human performance Laboratory. An appropriate balance of teaching, research and administrative activities will be negotiated.

The role would suit a person skilled in one or more of the areas listed above who now desires new challenges for the application and development of high level skills.

The post is 1.0 wte full time and fixed term for eighteen months. Starting salary will be in the range £35,459 – £41,682 depending on experience) per annum inclusive of London Allowance depending on experience. Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
