TECHNICAL ASSOCIATE I, Biological Engineering-Niles Lab, to work on a variety of projects combining genetics, molecular and cell biology, and microbiology approaches to identify and validate therapeutic targets against malaria.  Will work both independently and with postdoctoral and other technical associates to perform experiments. Responsibilities include plasmid DNA constructs for molecular biology studies; generating, genotyping, and maintaining transgenic parasite cell lines; carrying out quantitative cell viability assays; performing screens of moderate-sized compound collections against parasite cell lines to identify inhibitors; and analyzing quantitative data generated during viability and compound screening assays. Other responsibilities include assisting with preparatory work for experiments; maintaining laboratory safety, preparing areas and equipment in accordance with established standards, regulations, and laws; ordering lab supplies and equipment; and assisting with maintaining up-to-date inventory of lab supplies and equipment.  

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: bachelor’s degree in the life sciences, e.g., biology, biochemistry, molecular/cellular biology, biological engineering, or a closely related field; at least two years’ laboratory technician experience, including experience with cellular and molecular biology, sterile technique methods, mammalian/parasite cell culture, cell transfection, genomic DNA/RNA isolation, and PCR and DNA sequencing methods (Sanger and/or next generation); basic computer skills; and demonstrated problem-solving ability.  Seek highly organized, self-motivated individual who is able to maintain detailed and legible notebooks and electronic records; communicate effectively; integrate multiple inputs and requests from team members into streamlined, efficient, and productive workflows; follow complex directions with attention to detail and accuracy; and work both independently and as part of a team.  PREFERRED:  experience maintaining, generating, and/or cloning P. falciparum cell lines; and experience with Microsoft Office, GraphPad Prism, R, and FileMaker Pro. Job #18106
