About our Team

The Economics subject area is located in the Edinburgh Business School, which forms part of the expanded School of Social Sciences. The Edinburgh Business School delivers all of the University’s teaching and research in business and business-related subjects across multiple modes of delivery and across Heriot-Watt University’s multiple campuses. The Edinburgh Business School at Heriot-Watt University is also one of the world's largest providers of postgraduate business education, with over 11,000 students in 166 countries undertaking courses and degrees through online, blended and face-to-face means.

Within the Edinburgh Business School, the Economics subject area is a thriving unit of 13 academic staff based mainly in Edinburgh. We offer a range of undergraduate programmes in Economics as well as range of specialist Masters degrees that represent key strengths in the team. Economics at Heriot-Watt was ranked third in the UK in the Guardian University Guide 2018, and third in the UK and first in Scotland for Overall Satisfaction in the 2019 National Student Survey, reflecting an excellent record of student experience delivery and high graduate employability.

Detailed Description

Key duties and responsibilities

The post holder is required to:

  • Design and undertake teaching in a variety of settings, from small group tutorials to large lectures, to support the delivery of Heriot-Watt University’s pedagogic aims. As course coordinator/tutor, the post holder will coordinate with others (such as support staff and academic colleagues) to ensure student needs and expectations are met.
  • Extend, transform and apply knowledge acquired from scholarship to teaching, research and appropriate external activities. This includes a commitment to supporting student study by identifying learning needs of students, defining appropriate learning objectives and ensuring production of content, methods of delivery and learning materials to meet these needs. They will also take on responsibility for the design and delivery of their own modules and assessment methods. They will be expected to challenge thinking, foster debate and develop the ability of students to engage in critical discourse and rational thinking.
  • Deliver pedagogic initiatives, programmes and proposals for own or joint implementation, and conduct individual and collaborative research and scholarship projects, with a commitment to participate in collaborative outputs. Also welcome is an an interest in building on the pedagogic strengths of the unit, and in expanding its range of degree offerings, as well as interest in outward facing executive education, blended learning and public engagement opportunities.
  • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate Students/Research Associates as appropriate.
  • Supervise the work of students, providing advice on study skills and help them with learning problems. They will be expected to select appropriate assessment methods, assess the work and progress of students on this basis and provide constructive feedback to students. They will also provide pastoral support with sensitive issues concerning students, and recognise when further help may be required.
  • Continually update knowledge and understanding in their field or specialism and translate knowledge advances in the subject area into the course of study, as well as into their own research and scholarship activity. They will undertake continuous professional development (CPD) and participate in staff development activities.
  • Participate in internal and external committees, for example teaching groups, examination boards, progression boards etc. Also, the post holder will be required to contribute to administration within the School.
  • Collaborate with academic colleagues on course development, curriculum changes and other strategic issues such as student recruitment and marketing.

Education, qualifications and experience

The successful candidate should have:

  • A good honours degree and/or Masters in Economics or related subjects, along with a PhD in hand or in process of submission in Economics or cognate areas.
  • Demonstrable record of successful performance in teaching, research and scholarship. Outward facing engagement at level commensurate with assistant professor standing would be an asset.
  • A knowledge of UK Higher Education systems (or similar) would be desirable.
