Acting as a Compensation Consultant and Advisor within the School of Medicine, this position will report to the Executive Director and will be a critical partner to the Dean’s Office and senior management within the School of Medicine for the recruitment and retention of faculty. This role will develop recommendations on compensation, provide detailed compensation package analysis, review and develop faculty incentive plans, and ensure the School’s compensation and regulatory policies are followed.

The Fiscal Affairs group within the School of Medicine provides quality financial and budget data, oversight, analysis, reporting, operations, and sound financial management counsel to our user community. This group is composed of four distinct operating units - Controller, Budget & Financial Planning, Faculty Compensation, and Business Process Improvement - which provide essential financial services to the Dean’s Office and the School’s Departments and Programs.

Duties include:

  • Ensures compliance of School’s compensation and regulatory policies.
  • Review and approve faculty compensation packages.
  • Manage the deployment of all compensation transactions (salary and incentives) for the School’s 31 clinical and basic science departments and five institutes to ensure the University and School’s compensation and financial policies are complied with on a timely basis and legal and regulatory requirements are met.
  • Manage communications seeking Provost’s approval, as applicable, for faculty salary changes.
  • Work with School’s clinical DFAs to review and/or amend faculty incentive plans and facilitate required legal and Dean’s office review.
  • Oversee verification and payment of department incentives.
  • Develop and document new and existing internal control policies, procedures and processes for the payment of faculty compensation including internal controls and auditing related to and consistent with those of the university, especially in the area of compensation payments.
  • Work with the University Housing Office to secure exception approval for University’s faculty housing programs.
  • Supervise three staff engaged in the administration of faculty compensation.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Relevant subject matter expertise within physician pay practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and organization skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and ownership of projects.
  • Experience using and applying process improvement best practices/techniques, such as Lean.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
 

  • Master's degree and six years relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • User knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word and Advanced Excel
  • Advanced knowledge of Oracle or other business financial systems
  • Advanced understanding of financial principles.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to clearly and effectively present information to internal and external audiences, client groups and all levels of management.
  • Strong analytical skills to review and analyze complex financial information.
  • Strong leadership and management skills with previous experience managing people, delegating workload and providing direction/corrections as necessary. Knowledge of property management requirements related to Stanford or non-Stanford title of equipment and fabrications.
  • Demonstrated competency in project management of a high volume of work, some of which is cyclical.
  • If managing sponsored projects, ability to manage post and pre award administration for sponsored projects within his/her unit. Knowledge and fluency of governmental regulations and Cardinal Curriculum level I and II.
  • Knowledge of procurement needs, including sole-sourcing, cost analyses, vendor requirements, and small business reporting.
  • Experience working successfully with PIs, their administrative staff, the office of sponsored research and external sponsors.
  • Demonstrated success in performing meticulous, high quality and compliant work.
  • Ability to interpret complex research and fiscal policies, assimilate information from a wide range of resources and act like a mentor and resource to others.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly sitting.
  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, lift/carry objects weighing 11-20 pounds.
  • Rarely reach/work above shoulder.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Routine extended working hours during peak cycles; travel to school/unit sites across university.
