About the position

The Department of Energy and Process Engineering (EPT) is looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow for a research project within the area of energy efficient ventilation of residential buildings, to be hired for a period of 2 years.

The position as a Postdoctoral Fellow is a temporary position with the primary goal of qualifying for work in professional academic positions or in positions in business and industry, which requires a high level of research based competence. The starting date for the position is as soon as possible in the autumn 2019/early winter 2020. The position will be a part of the Sustainable Energy Systems research group at EPT.

The Head of Department is Professor Terese Løvås. The Postdoctoral Fellow will be supervised by Professor Hans Martin Mathisen and will form part of the team of researchers from NTNU, the research foundation SINTEF and the industrial partner Flexit AS.  The main goal is new development and innovations related to membrane based ventilation air heat recovery.

Main duties and responsibilities

In cold climates heat recovery from ventilation air is necessary to reduce energy consumption and through that greenhouse gas emissions from buildings. However, during cold periods the efficiency might be reduced due to frost problems. One emerging solution to reduce this problem is to use membrane exchangers that recover latent heat.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will primarily work on research carried out as part of the research project Defreeze MEE Now. Defreeze MEE Now is an industry owned project with NTNU as one of the research partners. The position involves theoretical studies of heat and mass transfer in air to air heat and energy exchangers, experimental work in the department’s own laboratory and cooperation on experiments in the Flexit’s laboratory.

Qualification requirements

A postdoctoral research fellowships is a qualification position in which the main objective is qualification for work in academic positions. Completion of a Norwegian doctoral degree in mechanical engineering (HVAC) or heat and mass transfer, or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree is required.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

NTNU is committed to following evaluation criteria for research quality according to The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment - DORA.

Qualifications in all of the following points are required:

  • Strong background in modelling of heat and mass transfer in heat exchangers ventilation air
  • Experience in condensing and frosting phenomena
  • Strong competence with membrane research
  • Programming skill in MATLAB

The candidate should have experience with both experimental and theoretical work.

Fluent English skills, both in speech and in writing, are required.

Personal characteristics

Personal qualities such as academic team player, creative, analytical, self-driven, flexible and engaged scholar will be emphasized.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal suitability, as well as motivation, in terms of the qualification requirements specified in the advertisement
