The School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S) IT department is seeking a project manager to act as the liaison between H&S departments and the Stanford IT community. This position is responsible for change management initiatives such as rolling out new University tools in the school. Responsibilities include building and analyzing reports, allocating IT resources, and developing communication plans. 

The project manager is responsible for ensuring the operational efficiency of the IT department, overseeing a variety of IT programs including hardware replacement and contracted desktop support. The project manager represents the IT department with stakeholders across the school and leads staff on projects without direct management authority.

A successful candidate is expected to oversee multiple projects, work independently, communicate clearly with a variety of constituents, and balance multiple priorities. The ideal candidate has an aptitude for new technologies and is able to clearly explain the benefits to different audiences. This position spends equal time managing projects, programs, and business relationships. 

The H&S IT team is a small, collaborative team that supports departments ranging from Music to Economics to Physics. Members of the team take on many roles and each manage a varied portfolio of projects.

CORE DUTIES:

  • Perform the full range of project management cycle: initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing. Lead projects requiring functional integration. Complete sub-project and/or stand-alone elements (or a contained project such as construction project).
  • Direct development of an action plan, and estimate requirements for resources, including management, labor, materials, and time required to complete project.
  • Facilitate discussions and negotiations to drive recommendation consensus within scope of responsibility.
  • Develop and help execute comprehensive change management strategy and communication plan relative to project scope and stakeholders on a focused project; actively manage resistance to change.
  • These elements typically delineate the project management involved at this level: Charter- charter and scoping involvement or scope definition, identify and shape scope; # of disciplines /stakeholders to manage is contained to localized department or university constituents; risk- manage and report on risks associated with projects to upper management, risk sharing is maintained between management and project manager; project complexity involves straight-forward technology applications to drive decisions; primary university relationship is at the individual faculty, department /director level; cumulative budget/scope from $100k to $250k.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and three years of related experience in management of projects of moderate size/complexity with limited performance risk, including project planning, scheduling, tracking, and budgeting, or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Polished written and oral communication skills to address a wide variety of audiences.
  • Ability to productively engage and influence cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated project management ability to employ integration, scope time management, cost, quality, human resources, communications, risk, and procurement components.
  • Demonstrated resilience, diplomacy, influence, relationship building, and problem solving skills in a variety of situations.
  • Depth of knowledge in technical discipline/domain needed to deliver projects.
  • Certifications and Licenses:
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certified completion of a Project Management Certificate program, or certification in process.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently sit, perform desk based computer tasks, and grasp lightly/fine manipulation and lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, write by hand.
  • Rarely use a telephone, kneel, crawl, climb ladders, twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulder, grasp forcefully.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May be exposed to extreme hot and cold temperatures, be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise > 80dB TWA, allergens/biohazards/chemicals /asbestos, or heavy metals or work on roofs at heights greater than 10 ft.
  • Travel locally and cross-university.
