Position Overview

As a teaching specialist, the Lecturer, Social Work will be responsible for teaching broadly into the Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work programs; for the scholarly pursuit of contemporary research-informed knowledge and professional practice, with a particular focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives; and for field placement supervision and liaison.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Develop, teach and coordinate social work subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate levels as appropriate;
  2. Engage with  local communities, welfare sector and professional bodies  to support student placement  experiences and contribute to the field education program through liaison and supervisory roles
  3. Undertake lectures and  tutorials, employing innovative learning and teaching pedagogies to enhance the student experience
  4. Assess students’ academic work and engage in social work research activities ;
  5. Support the University's commitment to the principles of reconciliation, which exemplify respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and the valuing of justice and equity for all Australians.
  6. Demonstrate commitment to the University, the profession and the discipline through service activities
  7. Demonstrate a commitment to the University values
  8. Support the principles of the TropEco program and engage in commitment to JCU sustainability goals and objectives.

Generic Accountabilities

There are generic responsibilities that apply to all James Cook University staff.

  1. The Lecturer Level B Teaching Specialist is required to observe the lawful and reasonable directions, policies and decisions of the University Council, understand and comply with the Enterprise Agreement, the Statutes and Rules of the University, the policies and decisions of the University Council and other appropriate University authorities, as in force from time to time.
  2. The Lecturer Level B Teaching Specialist is required to demonstrate a personal commitment to ensure personal safety and the safety of others and contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance. This includes the effective implementation and compliance with James Cook University WHS policies, procedures and safe systems of work, together with all relevant legislation, duties and obligations. Contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance.
  3. The Lecturer Level B Teaching Specialist is required to exercise proper discretion in all matters affecting the well-being of the University which involve public writing or speaking in accordance with the University’s Code of Conduct.

Selection Criteria

Selection and appointments will be assessed against selection criteria.


  1. A doctorate, or a doctoral thesis near completion, in social work or a closely associated discipline.
  2. Full membership, or eligibility for full membership, of the Australian Association of Social Work.
  3. Evidence of successful teaching  and supervision of students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels including students on field placement
  4. Substantial social work professional practice experience in human service organisations and demonstrated ability to engage with technologies.
  5. Demonstrated ability to teach and embrace antiracist and inter-cultural ways of working. Commitment to contributing to the ongoing embedding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander worldviews and perspectives into the social work curricula.
  6. Sound understanding of the nexus between teaching, research and scholarship in approaches to teaching and learning.


  1. Success in attracting competitive research funding relative to career stage.
  2. Evidence of both community and professional engagement.
