PhD Candidate, Department of Engineering Cybernetics

About the position

We have a vacancy for a PhD position at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics at NTNU.

Integrating intermittent renewable energy such as wind energy in power systems (hybrid power systems) leads to challenging control problems, especially for smaller systems. The uncertainty in power production must be handled such that current and future energy demands are met in a way that satisfies requirements. Model predictive control is a methodology well suited to handle control aspects of this, due to the predictive capabilities, and these methods may be extended to cope well with the stochastic disturbances caused by weather conditions.

The research task in this project is to develop new model predictive control methods that handle large stochastic disturbances. The case for these methods should be hybrid offshore power systems to reduce emissions in petroleum production.

The positon is sponsored by the LowEmission Research Centre. This centre will develop new technologies and concepts for offshore energy systems, energy efficiency and integration with renewable power production technologies for application on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS).

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Research into model predictive control methods for handling large stochastic disturbances
  • Upon agreement with the candidate and the department, the position can be extended to four years if the candidate undertake teaching duties

Qualification requirements

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in engineering cybernetics, automatic control, process systems engineering, applied mathematics or equivalent. Background in control theory and numerical methods for control and optimization is a requirement. The candidate should have a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant.

Applicants should have good programming experience (Matlab, Python, or similar).

Good written and oral English language skills are required. Applicants from non-European countries where English is not the official language must present an official language test report. The following tests can be used as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are: TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test) IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted) CAE/CPE: grade B or A.
