Applications are invited for the newly-created post of Research Programme Manager, within the Centre for Genomics and Child Health in the Blizard Institute, Queen Mary University of London. An experienced, collaborative and flexible individual with excellent communication skills is sought for this exciting role within the world-leading, long-term Genes & Health research programme.
Genes & Health is a long-term, innovative programme of research, receiving funding from the Wellcome Trust (£4million), MRC (£5 million), and others. It aims to generate fundamental discoveries in genomics and health, for conditions including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, mental health and dementia. Genes & Health seeks to bring a detailed understanding of disease in British Bangladeshis and British Pakistanis through a large scale community genomic programme, and has already recruited 41,000 participants and led to high impact publications (e.g. Science 2016). Genes & Health started its recruitment in east London, and has since expanded its activities to Luton and Watford, Bradford and Manchester. Genes & Health is based at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). The medical school was ranked 1st in London in the National Student Survey, and 3rd in the UK by the Guardian University Guide 2018, and is placed in the top 7 institutions for clinical medicine in the UK 2014 Research Excellence Framework. QMUL is part of the prestigious Russell Group of Universities.
Genes & Health uses cutting-edge, interdisciplinary scientific methods, combining deep genetic analysis with health data science on all participants (Stage 1 studies), and focused phenotypic studies on recall volunteers (Stage 2). Genes & Health works with a range of world-leading academic partners (including colleagues at the Broad Institute, Sanger Institute, University of Oxford). Genes & Health is developing industrial partnerships with a consortium of pharmaceutical companies to develop innovative approaches to patient stratification and treatment.
Genes & Health is embedded in the communities it recruits from, and its primary aim is to improve the health of people of British-Pakistani and British-Bangladeshi origin. As such, Genes & Health works closely in partnership with community organisations (e.g. Social Action for Health, in east London) and health partners (Clinical Commissioning Groups).
The Genes & Health programme is expanding, with target recruitment funded up to 100,000 volunteers. The first wave of genetic data on all volunteers, coupled with health data access, is generating significant interest for collaborative research from a range of academic and industrial partners.
The postholder will support a range of activities within the Genes & Health research programme, and allow it to flourish and grow as well as being integral to a dynamic, friendly and innovative interdisciplinary team of researchers, led by the Chief Investigator, Professor David van Heel. The broad range of responsibilities required would suit a flexible and adaptive individual who is self-motivated, collaborative and an excellent team-player. The postholder will have opportunities to develop and grow their own expertise within a world-class, long-term research programme with a large international network of researchers, partner organisations and funders. The post will be based at the Blizard Institute in the vibrant east End of London, with excellent transport links (soon to include Crossrail).
The post is 0.6-1.0 WTE (whole time equivalent) fixed term appointment for 3 years. Starting salary will be in the range of £47,325 - £52,833 per annum pro-rata (Grade 6 on the QMUL payscale), inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave (pro rata), a pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
