Senior Lecturer / Lecturer in BAME History
Faculty of Arts, Design and Social Sciences

Northumbria University seeks to appoint a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in the History of BAME communities in Britain and/or Continental Europe, in any period. We seek to appoint a candidate with an excellent research profile, who will make a strong contribution to our submission to REF 2021, and who has strong experience of teaching History at all levels up to postgraduate. The appointee will work within the History subject group in the Humanities Department. Our Foundation Year, Undergraduate and Postgraduate History programmes have benefited from expansion and diversification in recent years, including into areas such as African history, environmental history, and the history of genocide. The appointee will further contribute to this diversification and will bring their specialist expertise in the history of BAME communities in Britain and/or Continental Europe (from any period in history) to the subject group.

The Humanities Department is focused strongly on excellence in research and teaching. We have a commitment to outward-facing work, as reflected in community engagement and knowledge exchange with different partners. Our Department brings together 80 academic staff and 800 students in American Studies, History, Music, English Literature, English Language and Creative Writing. Undergraduate students in American Studies, History and English come to us with the highest average entry qualifications for these subjects across the modern university sector. The History group develops its research within a vibrant interdisciplinary context underpinned by the Institute for the Humanities, working on important themes such as conflict and society, medical humanities, environmental humanities, activism, mobility and diaspora, American Studies, identity and heritage, creative practice and gender and sexuality.
