At UNSW, we pride ourselves on being a workplace where the best people come to do their best work.

We aspire to this in the belief that a great university, which is a global leader in discovery, innovation, impact, education and thought leadership, can make an enormous difference to the lives of people in Australia and around the world.

About the Centre for Law, Markets and Regulation (CLMR)

The Centre for Law, Markets and Regulation is the premier research centre for the study of the dynamics of market regulation (https://clmr.unsw.edu.au/). It draws together researchers from across both UNSW Law and the UNSW Business School. The Centre’s work is distinctive in the range of market institutions it studies, and its focus on understanding the nature and effects of regulation. The work is also distinctive because the CLMR’s research is closely attentive to the social justice dimensions of the issues researched.

About the role

  • $76,570 - $102,092 + 17% Superannuation
  • Full time (35 hours per week)
  • 2 year fixed-term position, with potential for an extension of a further year.

The Centre for Law, Markets and Regulation is seeking a Research Associate to play a crucial role in supporting and co-ordinating the Centre’s engagement in policy research and publication, including submissions to inquiries, public events and in the media. For example, over 2018 and early 2019 the Associate was integrally involved with the Centre’s work on issues raised by the Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services Industry. The Research Associate will also be integrally involved in the broader research programme of the Centre, including current and future research grants and in the dissemination of Centre research through media, website and other means.

The role of Research Associate reports to the Centre Director and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Creating and maintaining pages and other materials related to external engagement on the Centre’s website
  • Organising events (workshops, conferences and the like) related to the Centre’s work.
  • Engaging with relevant Centre researchers in the drafting and compilation of research grant applications
  • Conducting research under limited supervision either as a member of a team or, where appropriate, independently, leading to the production of high-quality research outputs such as refereed journal articles.
  • Engaging with the student interns attached to the Centre over the course of the academic year.

Specific requirements include:

  • An undergraduate degree or degrees containing exposure to (each of) law, economics and finance.
  • A PhD or equivalent focused on law, regulation or public policy which was awarded no earlier than 1 January 2017.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (oral and written).
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with peers and superiors and to communicate effectively with members of the wider community.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in project-oriented teams and with limited day-to-day supervision, meeting agreed deadlines.
  • Highly developed research skills.
