The University of Helsinki Faculty of Arts is Finland’s oldest and largest unit of teaching and research in the arts in terms of the organisation and selection of its disciplines.

The Department of Finnish, Finno-Ugrian and Scandinavian Studies (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-arts/research/disciplines/finnish-...) is Finland’s largest and most diverse centre of research and academic education in Finnish, Swedish and related languages as well as literature produced in them. The Department is an internationally renowned centre of learning in Finno-Ugrian and Nordic languages as well as home to the world’s largest concentration of Finnish language and literature research and academic teaching. The Department’s research focuses on the study of interaction, cognitive linguistics and construction grammar, language contacts, linguistic change and variation, texts in society, and the genres and worlds of modernism.

The Faculty of Arts, University of Helsinki, invites applications for the position of POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER POSITION for a fixed term from January 1st, 2020 to December 31st, 2022. The field of the position is Finno-Ugrian (Uralic) studies and it belongs to the Department of Finnish, Finno-Ugrian and Scandinavian Studies.

The postdoctoral researcher will conduct research in the field of Uralic languages, concentrating mainly on languages other than Finnish, Hungarian or Estonian. Alongside research the postdoctoral researcher will take part in teaching, supervision and other departmental activities and is also expected to take part in the planning of research projects.

According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, the appointee must hold a doctoral degree and have the ability to conduct independent scientific work as well as the teaching skills required by the position. The person we are looking for should have good social skills, and have a pro-active attitude toward his/her work.

According to the Government Decree on Universities, postdoctoral researchers are required to be proficient in Finnish or Swedish. They must also have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in the other of these two languages. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, appointees must also know English.

The salary will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of the Finnish universities. In addition, the appointees will be paid a salary component based on personal performance.
