About the position

A position as PhD Research Fellow in Mathematics is available at the Department of Mathematics at the University of Oslo.

If the successful candidate has a good knowledge of one Scandinavian language (Norwegian, Swedish, Danish), the fellowship will be for a period of 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work (teaching responsibilities at the Department). Otherwise, the fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with no compulsory work.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the same institution.

Job description

The research fellow will be affiliated to one of our sections in mathematics; these sections are "Stochastic analysis, finance, insurance and risk", "Differential equations and computational mathematics", "Algebra, geometry and topology", and "Several complex variables, logic and operator algebras". The application letter must contain information about the preferred research group or section and an outline of a tentative Ph.D. project.

The research fellow is assumed to work on a project in the core activity of the department, focusing on foundational or theoretical research, and within the research interests of at least one of the research groups.

Qualification requirements

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this and they are expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

• Master’s degree in mathematicsor equivalent
• Foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system
• Candidates without a Master’s degree must have completed this degree before starting the fellowship

Grade requirements:

The norm is as follows:

• The average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor’s degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system
• The average grade point for courses included in the Master’s degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system
• The Master’s thesis must have the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system

The fellowship requires admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
