Position Overview

The incumbent has a strong background in Public Health Management and Tropical Health programs with a demonstrated passion, experience and capacity for teaching. The incumbent has a lead role in the design and delivery of innovative and high quality content in the field of Public Health Management and Health Policies. A demonstrated interest in contributing to the Discipline’s research activity in areas matching their professional interests and strengths will be highly regarded.

The Discipline plays a key role in embedding public health curriculum across undergraduate health professional courses and is developing short courses for professional development in Australia and the region.

The position offers the incumbent the scope to develop their own research portfolio in association with a strong group of collaborators in the College of Public Health, Medical and Veterinary Sciences, the Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine, the newly formed Tropical Australian Academic Health Centre, the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Vector-borne and Neglected Tropical Diseases, other research centres within James Cook University (JCU) and external groups based within Australia and the region.

Division of Tropical Health and Medicine

The Division of Tropical Health and Medicine encompasses human and animal health professional areas and related biomedical science disciplines. The Division has a particular focus on the health of rural, remote and Indigenous Australian communities and tropical medicine.

College of Public Health, Medical and Veterinary Sciences

As part of the Division of Tropical Health and Medicine the College of Public Health, Medical and Veterinary Sciences promotes, fosters, supports and administers quality teaching and research at JCU in the areas of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, Veterinary Science, Biomedicine and Molecular and Cell Biology. Working in a collaborative leadership model with the Office of the Division, the other Colleges and the Mount Isa Centre for Rural and Remote Health, the College of Public Health, Medical and Veterinary Sciences contributes to advancing the strategic agenda and to strengthening partnerships and engagement.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Coordinate and teach as directed by the Academic Head and/or direct supervisor into underand postgraduate subjects, offered by Public Health and Tropical Medicine on the Cairns and Townsville and outer campuses (Mount Isa, Mackay and Thursday Island) face-to-face and virtually, including, public health management, health policy and health economics.
  2. Contribute to the development and ongoing update of subject materials and innovative new offerings in the discipline as described above, including short course delivery in Australia and regionally.
  3. Contribute to research activities in Discipline of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, including sourcing and applying for new funding.
  4. Contribute towards the administration and other activities of the Discipline and University as required.
  5. Support the University's commitment to the principles of reconciliation, which exemplify respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and the valuing of justice and equity for all Australians.
  6. Demonstrate a commitment to the University values.

Generic Accountabilities

There are generic responsibilities that apply to all James Cook University staff.

  1. The Lecturer is required to observe the lawful and reasonable directions, policies and decisions of the University Council, understand and comply with the Enterprise Agreement, the Statutes and Rules of the University, the policies and decisions of the University Council and other appropriate University authorities, as in force from time to time.
  2. The Lecturer is required to demonstrate a personal commitment to ensure personal safety and the safety of others and contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance. This includes the effective implementation and compliance with James Cook University WHS policies, procedures and safe systems of work, together with all relevant legislation, duties and obligations. Contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance.

Special Conditions

  • It is a requirement of this position to be able to travel to other JCU campuses.

Selection Criteria

Selection and appointments will be assessed against selection criteria.

Essential

  1. PhD (or equivalent higher research degree) in a public health related area, Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (MPH&TM) and a Master of Public Health (MPH), as well as Certificate and Diploma level courses covering core public health competencies with a particular focus on tropical, rural and remote environments, offered through online and face-to-face delivery in semester and block mode or equivalent in a closely related area and professional/academic experience in the public health field particularly in programme management and implementation and/ or an equivalent combination of experience and/or education and/or training.
  2. Minimum 3 years of working experience in health management at mid-level position.
  3. Ability to play an active role in the design, development and coordination of public health management and health policy related subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate level as well as substantial experience of activities that reflect scholarly learning and teaching practices of internal and external offerings in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in an multidisciplinary team.
  4. Proven research record based on publications in peer-reviewed journals and research funding attracted. Experience in developing and applying for research funding proposals internally and externally on an individual basis or as a member of a team.
  5. Demonstrated ability to contribute to discipline and cross-discipline governance at academic group and college level through participation in committees.
  6. Evidence of management, support and organisational skills at subject level in line with policy and procedures when working with tutors and casual or fixed term employees.

Desirable

  1. Experience working or living in a rural, remote and/or tropical locations within or outside Australia.
  2. Established local and regional research networks.
  3. Possess qualifications recognised and registrable in Australia.
