About the position

We have a vacancy for a 3-year PhD fellowship at the Department of Geoscience and Petroleum.

The PhD project is part of the Low Emission Research Centre which is a large 8-year research centre for petroleum activities (PETROSENTER) financed by the Research Council of Norway. Partners include SINTEF, NTNU, and 27 industry Partners. For more information about the Centre, visit the website:

The main objective of this project is to explore and study new and existing technologies and methods for subsea systems and wells that allow to reduce energy usage in Brownfields and Greenfields in the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The ultimate goal is to develop and advance technologies and methods for further implementation and deployment by the industry. This will be reached mainly by numerical process modeling.

This PhD project is an interdisciplinary initiative of the Department of Geoscience and Petroleum and the Department of Process Technology of SINTEF Industry. The PhD student is assigned to the Department of Geoscience and Petroleum, but the PhD candidate is expected to spend considerable time at the Department of Process Technology of SINTEF Industry. The candidate is supervised by Associate Prof. Stanko from the Department of Geoscience and Petroleum, and Research Scientist Dr. Heiner Schümann from SINTEF Industry will act as co-supervisor.

The position reports to the Head of Department of Geoscience and Petroleum at NTNU.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • This PhD project will explore the use of numerical modeling tools to develop optimized design and selection methods for energy efficient subsea and in-well components including guidelines for implementation and operation of the technology.
  • This PhD is part of a working package within the Low Emission Research Centre called “Energy efficient Processing”.
