Are looking for PhD researchers in: Applied Biosciences for Health, Social Policy, Energy

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Undertake supervised scientific research including preparing, setting up, conducting and recording outcomes of projects, experiments, field work, interviews
  • Liaise with research staff within relevant research groups, Research Fellows, Principal Investigators to enhance expertise, knowledge and contribute to the overall success
  • Undertake international and/or industrial placements where necessary/appropriate
  • Interact with external partners/industrial contacts in a professional manner
  • Analyse and interpret results of own research using standard research methods and techniques
  • Prepare high quality reports of findings and present findings to relevant supervisors and research groups (including progress reports)
  • Write up research findings in line with host institution PhD requirements/regulations and produce a high standard of thesis
  • Actively participate and contribute to the DTA3 programme, electives, schools, to enhance personal and professional development which contributes to research knowledge and skills
  • Comply with host institution policies relating to health and safety, equality of opportunity, data protection and management
  • Carry out any other appropriate duties as agreed with supervisors which may include minimal teaching at a basic level

SKILLS: 

  • Ability to undertake research through the preparation, setting-up, conducting and recording of the outcomes of experiments, field work and interviews
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to use own initiative and judgement to develop appropriate methodologies and approaches in order to further research
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English to produce clear, concise and accurate reports
  • Excellent IT skills to include any programming languages/software packages specific to the project
  • Ability to prioritise work independently and as part of the wider research group to deliver research objectives
  • Ability to undertake research in one or more different countries (where appropriate)

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Sufficient breadth and depth of knowledge within the field specific to the project
  • A sound knowledge of general research processes and methodologies
  • Knowledge of the requirements of undertaking a PhD

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience of data collection and presentation of findings in a relevant discipline
  • Previous experience of undertaking research in a relevant field
  • Experience of studying or undertaking research in a different country (desirable)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Honours degree in a relevant academic subject (equivalent to UK 2:1 or first class) OR Masters degree in a relevant academic subject OR An Honours degree with a Lower Second Class grade combined with postgraduate Masters Degree at Merit.

Contract is full-time, 36 months fixed term, starting April 2020.
