Job Title:          Faculty Positions in Philosophy/Chinese Literature/Anthropology/Linguistics

Department:     Division of Humanities

Job ID: 4909

Job Posting Details

The Division of Humanities of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is searching for suitable candidates to fill tenure-track/tenured faculty positions in the disciplines of Philosophy, Chinese Literature, Anthropology and Linguistics.  Applications at all ranks will be considered.  The positions are to be filled beginning in Fall 2020.

The successful candidates will take part in teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate courses mainly offered by the Division.  For the disciplines of Philosophy, Chinese Literature and Anthropology, the field of specialization is open, with preference for Classical Chinese Philosophy, Comparative Philosophy, or Moral and Political Philosophy for the faculty position in Philosophy; pre-modern Chinese literature and culture for the faculty position in Chinese Literature; and the China/Southeast Asia area for the faculty position in Anthropology, to complement the research of the existing faculty.  For Linguistics, we welcome applications from sociolinguistics, dialectology, historical linguistics and other fields to complement current faculty who specialize in phonetics and phonology of Sinitic and/or other languages spoken in China.  In the case of all four disciplines, candidates whose research interests are cross-border, comparative and interdisciplinary are particularly welcome to apply.

Applicants should have a PhD degree from a reputable university with a publication record of international impact, a strong record of grant application, proven teaching commitment and performance, experience and readiness in administrative matters, and demonstrated service to the academic community and/or the public.  Leadership qualities in research, teaching and/or service are expected. English is the medium of instruction and administration at HKUST but proficiency in Chinese will be an advantage.  HKUST is an institution promoting diversity.  We therefore strongly encourage suitable candidates of diverse backgrounds to apply.

Apart from a master’s degree program in Chinese Culture and research postgraduate program at both master’s and doctoral level under the broad arena of Humanities, the Division of Humanities offers general education courses for all undergraduates at HKUST.  Together with the Division of Social Science, our Division offers a multidisciplinary undergraduate major program of BSc in Global China Studies.

Starting salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Fringe benefits including annual leave and medical/dental benefits will be provided.  Housing benefits will also be provided where applicable. For appointment at Assistant Professor level, initial appointment will normally be on a three-year contract.  A gratuity will be payable upon completion of contract.

Application Procedure

Applications should be sent to recruithuma@ust.hk together with (i) full CV; (ii) a statement of research, teaching and service; (iii) five most representative publications all in PDF formats; and (iv) record of teaching performance.  Applicants for Assistant Professor must submit three letters of recommendation at the time of application.  The Search and Appointments Committee of the Division will begin to review the applications commencing 22 November 2019.  The review process will continue until the positions are filled.

(Information provided by applicants will be used for recruitment and other employment-related purposes.)
