The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences encompasses the disciplines of Mathematics, Physics and Statistics and is one of three Schools in the Faculty of Science.

The Discipline of Physics is a well-established and highly collegial academic unit with a history of delivering world-class research outcomes, excellence in Physics teaching and nationally recognised programs of community outreach and service. Physical Sciences (2-digit code) at the University of Newcastle was rated with the highest possible score of ‘well above world standard’ in the latest Excellence of Research in Australia (ERA) report. The fields of research (4-digit codes) ‘Astronomical and Space Sciences’ and ‘Other Physical Sciences’ (which comprises mainly Medical Physics in Newcastle), were also awarded ‘well above world standard’. The Discipline of Physics has a focus on disciplinary and transdisciplinary research that encompasses scholarship and industry engagement, working at the interfaces of academic disciplines and with industry to deliver solutions to global issues.

About your NEW role

Both positions will be primarily based at the Callaghan campus in Newcastle and will contribute to teaching postgraduate and undergraduate courses in Physics including large first year classes comprising students from diverse study programs and engage with flexible course delivery modes and innovative teaching practices. Across both levels you will contribute to a dynamic, transdisciplinary and globally competitive research environment through research collaboration, securing external grant income, delivering high quality publication outcomes and attracting higher degree research students.

Lecturer or Senior Lecturer 4122

This role will;

  • Deliver impactful research outputs including publications in high-quality refereed journals/outlets.
  • Take a proactive role in grant applications and provide evidence of emerging national recognition in a field of expertise.
  • Demonstrate educational leadership in Teaching and Learning at the course level and a contribution to program, discipline and School levels by:
  • Actively updating and delivering courses and programs in various formats and locations (including online delivery and support)

Associate Professor 4121

This role will;

  • Provide leadership that fosters staff development and promotes cooperation between the university, government, national and international academia, and industry.
  • Build and lead a research program to attract undergraduate and postgraduate students to the discipline.
  • Enhance student learning and experience by leading staff in delivering a relevant curriculum using contemporary teaching pedagogies (e.g. blended and active learning).
  • Work cohesively within a team environment to strengthen current and future research priorities of the discipline.

Participate in activities to maintain academic standards and administrative effectiveness within the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences and the Faculty of Science

About you 

The focus areas of your research interest in the Discipline of Physics include computational and experimental Space Science, Photonics, Nanoscience and Materials Physics, and Medical Science. However candidates coming from any area of Physics will be considered if they complement our existing portfolio and align with the research strategy and capabilities of the University of Newcastle.

The remuneration is from:

Lecturer $99,213 + 17% super and is commensurate with experience.

Senior Lecturer $121,536 + 17% super and is commensurate with experience.

Associate Professor $146,340 + 17% super and is commensurate with experience.
