Position Description

Harvard School of Dental Medicine is seeking applicants for the position of Senior Tutor in the School’s innovative D.M.D. curriculum. This appointment also comes with the academic rank of Instructor in the appropriate academic department based on successful candidate’s area of expertise. The mission of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) is to develop and foster a community of global leaders dedicated to improving human health by integrating dentistry and medicine at the forefront of education, research and patient care. Senior Tutors are responsible for managing the education of predoctoral dental students. They engage in preclinical, clinical, and didactic teaching, and also serve as directors for predoctoral courses. Additional responsibilities include predoctoral curriculum development, oversight of the delivery of comprehensive dental care to patients in the student teaching practice as well as committee service and other administrative duties. The Senior Tutor may head a Treatment Team consisting of students from all four years of the DMD program, and will serve as mentor, facilitator, coach and teacher in a multi-disciplinary educational environment. The Senior Tutor will balance caseloads among students to ensure breadth of experience across all disciplines including treatment planning and practice management, provide formal approval of treatment plans, and track student progress through the case completion curriculum. In conjunction with Attending Clinical Faculty from the various clinical disciplines, the Senior Tutor will supervise students on the clinic floor and oversee fourth year students during extramural rotations. In collaboration with other Senior Tutors, s/he will work with the Teaching Practices Manager and Patient Service Liaisons to ensure smooth operation of the clinic; monitor productivity, income, and expenditures for the Team; and produce quarterly and annual reports. Senior Tutors also serve as head of an academic Society and liaison with the corresponding Harvard Medical School academic Society. Each Senior Tutor also assumes responsibility for one or more School-wide programs at the School of Dental Medicine. Assignment of these program responsibilities is based on individual interests and the unique abilities of the individual. Full time appointment consists of four days as Senior Tutor plus one day for patient care, research, and/or other administrative activity.

Basic Qualifications

DMD or DDS degree, eligibility for licensure in Massachusetts, broad experience in the disciplines of general dentistry. Experience in teaching, particularly lecturing and developing courses or course materials and an overall understanding of the predoctoral curriculum. Experience in research and scholarship.

Additional Qualifications

Experience in an educational setting, managerial experience in a group practice setting, computer literacy, and experience with computerized clinic management systems. Good interpersonal and organizational skills, and excellent personnel management skills.
