Position Description

HSDM provides a robust academic environment, with faculty and students of the highest quality and the broadest range of experience. Through its Office of Diversity Inclusion (ODI), the School advances diversity and inclusion efforts to foster an environment that is comfortable and welcoming to all members of the HSDM community. ODI enhances the HSDM community and supports the achievement of excellence in education, research, and patient care that is the hallmark of this School.

The Director of Diversity and Inclusion in this part-time position develops and/or leads initiatives to recruit diverse students and faculty, particularly those from underrepresented minorities. This academic appointment comes with the rank of instructor, assistant professor or associate professor, commensurate with experience and qualifications, in the appropriate academic department based on successful candidate’s area of expertise. The successful candidate will report to the Vice Dean as well as his/her academic Department Chair. The Director’s responsibilities include representing HSDM, both within Harvard and externally, at conferences concerning multicultural issues in higher education; focusing on student admissions to ensure that the School draws candidates from underrepresented and diverse backgrounds; works with faculty search committees and department chairs to advise on recruitment strategies to attract diverse candidates and utilize best practices for searches; provide support services and programs to enhance a diverse population; and helps foster a culturally sensitive and appropriate atmosphere by evaluating curricula, sponsoring symposia, promoting speaker series and engaging in other developmental initiatives. This position will lead a committee on Diversity and Inclusion composed of faculty and students.

The Director works in close collaboration with Dr. Joan Reede, Dean for Diversity Inclusion and Community Partnership at Harvard Medical School, as well as representatives from the Office of the Assistant to the President for Institutional Diversity and Equity (H-OAP) and Faculty Development and Diversity. Within the School, the Director also works closely with the Office of Dental Education and the Office of Human Resources to support these initiatives. This position requires a 2 ½ day commitment per week to fulfill these responsibilities.

Basic Qualifications

Candidates must possess a Terminal Degree in education, health professions (medicine, dentistry, pharmacy), or other relevant field, and/or equivalent work experience preferred.

Additional Qualifications

DMD a plus. Experience in an educational setting preferred. Demonstrated experience working in the area of Diversity and Inclusion with programs that serve diverse student populations with special attention and outreach to underrepresented students a plus. Experience maintaining collaborative relationships and partnerships with campus stakeholders both internal and external to the academic environment. The ideal candidate would possess good interpersonal and organizational skills, and personnel management skills.
