The Legal Design Lab seeks to hire a Policy and Design Lead for a two-year term. The Policy and Design Lead will work primarily on: (1) building a better legal Internet by improving how online platforms provide jurisdiction-correct and issue-correct information to people seeking out help; and (2) promoting access to justice for people of low and moderate incomes, in partnership with courts and legal aid groups. The Policy and Design Lead will work closely with Legal Design Lab Director Margaret Hagan to develop, implement, and administer the vision, strategy, and goals of one or both of these projects. Both of these projects employ technology and design to help improve critical issues of law and policy.

Core Duties:

• Oversee and administer research activities by evaluating projects, making recommendations that impact policies and programs, and coordinating and implementing changes;
• Collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends to determine project effectiveness; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the project;
• Help lead design experimentation and stakeholder testing;
• Conduct research, writing, and analysis, and organize policy workshops;
• Manage projects with multiple stakeholders efficiently, while communicating with partners effectively;
• Manage project grants, including assisting with reporting.
• Contribute to outreach strategy related to program communications, development, partnerships, and fundraising/funding.
• Specific responsibilities may include: setting up audits and formulating standards for evaluating search platforms re: legal information; working with Lab teams to build and test tools to assist self-represented litigants in California courts; conducting research around these issues and developing workshops and other opportunities for education and policy development.
• The fellow will be part of the Lab team, while also developing leadership as they manage all or parts of these projects. The fellow will work with students across the university in projects run by the Lab. The fellow will make regular updates on activities and research to stakeholders, and build connections across the public and private sectors among people working on these issues.

Minimum Requirements:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree and two years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience. JD is preferred but not required.

Strong candidates will have experience in one or more of the following: program administration, project management, research, and policy or design work.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Demonstrated oral, written, and analytical skills.
• Data fluency and tech proficiency.
• Project management with multiple stakeholders.
• Creativity in solving problems presented in complex systems or organizations.
• This is a two-year term position not open for renewal. This is not a pre-academia track position.

The Center on the Legal Profession, directed by Professor Deborah L. Rhode, supports research, teaching, programs, and public policy initiatives on crucial issues facing the bar. Key concerns include how to enhance access to justice, sustain ethical values, train lawyers as leaders, and effectively respond to the changing dynamics of legal workplaces.

The Legal Design Lab

The Legal Design Lab is an interdisciplinary project in law and design, working at the intersection of human-centered design, technology, and law to build a new generation of legal products and services. The Lab’s mission is to train a new generation of leaders & innovators in law, research innovation in practice & delivery of legal services, and build new models of legal services. The Lab is headed by Director and Lecturer Margaret Hagan. The bulk of the Lab’s work is project-based and involves partnerships across the Stanford campus and beyond.
