The University of Central Lanashire is recruiting PhD researchers across in the field(s) of Energy.

Overview of Duties and Responsibilities

  • To undertake supervised scientific research to include preparing, setting up, conducting and recording outcomes of projects, experiments, field work, interviews etc.
  • To liaise with other research staff within relevant research groups e.g. Research Fellows, Principal Investigators etc to enhance expertise and knowledge and contribute to the overall success of that group
  • To undertake international and/or industrial placements where necessary/appropriate
  • To interact with external partners/industrial contacts in a professional manner
  • To analyse and interpret results of own research using standard research methods and techniques
  • To prepare high quality reports of findings and to present these findings to relevant supervisors and research groups (to include progress reports)
  • To write up research findings in line with host institution PhD requirements/regulations and produce a high standard of thesis for examination.
  • To actively participate and contribute to the DTA3 training programme e.g. electives, summer schools etc., to enhance personal and professional development which contributes to research knowledge and skills
  • To comply with host institution policies relating to health and safety, equality of opportunity and data protection and management
  • Carry out any other appropriate duties as agreed with their PhD supervisors which may include some minimal teaching at a basic level.

Required Skills, Qualifications and Experience

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to undertake research through the preparation, setting-up, conducting and recording of the outcomes of experiments, field work and interviews etc.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to use own initiative and judgement to develop appropriate methodologies and approaches in order to further research
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English to produce clear, concise and accurate reports
  • Excellent IT skills to include any programming languages / software packages specific to the research project
  • Ability to prioritise work independently and also as part of the wider research group to deliver research objectives
  • Ability to undertake research in one or more different countries (where appropriate)

GENERAL & SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE

  • Sufficient breadth and depth of knowledge within the field specific to the research project (see project descriptions for further information)
  • A sound knowledge of general research processes and methodologies
  • Knowledge of the requirements of undertaking a PhD programme of research

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

  • Experience of data collection and presentation of findings in a relevant discipline
  • Previous experience of undertaking research in a relevant field
  • Experience of studying or undertaking research in a different country (desirable)

QUALIFICATIONS/TRAINING

  • An Honours degree in a relevant academic subject (equivalent to UK upper second or first class) OR Masters level degree in a relevant academic subject OR An Honours degree with a Lower Second Class grade combined with a postgraduate Masters Degree at Merit.
