About QUT

QUT is a major Australian university with a global outlook and a 'real world' focus. We are one of the nation’s fastest growing research universities and our courses are in high demand. We are an ambitious and collaborative institution that seeks to equip our students and graduates with the skills they will need in an increasingly disrupted and challenged world. We are transforming the student experience we offer our 50,000 students and we place a premium on the international and national accreditation of our various professional degrees. Our internationally award-winning Science and Engineering Centre is home to The Cube, acknowledged as one of the world’s largest digital interactive learning and display spaces. QUT established the world's first Creative Industries Faculty, and we invest heavily in collaborative learning and interdisciplinary research environments, including the new $95M Education Precinct. Further information about QUT can be obtained from the website at www.qut.edu.au.

Our Vision

The QUT Blueprint 5 is our institutional strategic plan. It sets out priorities, strategies and key performance indicators to drive greater coherence and coordination of our efforts. Our overall vision for the future is:

  • to provide outstanding real world education through physical and virtual learning environments and innovative courses that lead to excellent outcomes for graduates living in a diverse and complex environment characterised by rapid, transformative change;
  • to focus on being a globally leading university that delivers solutions to the challenges of today and of the future through high-impact research that spans discipline boundaries and works in partnership with end users, leveraging our deep technological strengths and alignment to the human capital and innovation needs of the global economy;
  • to strengthen and extend partnerships with professional and broader communities to build our reputation as a source of knowledge that is applied to real world challenges.

Creative Industries Faculty

QUT established the world’s first Creative Industries Faculty in 2001, recognising the growing significance of creativity, transdisciplinarity and technology-driven research and creative practice as Australia moves towards a knowledge-based economy. The Faculty has 8,000 students, with some 11 per cent from overseas, and around 300 academic staff.

The Faculty is structured around three schools: Communication, Design, and Creative Practice. It has a strong and growing research profile that encompasses a full spectrum from basic research, applied research and contract research undertaken with and for partners in the creative industries sector and beyond at state, national and international levels.

Further information on the Creative Industries Faculty can be reviewed on its website at http://www.qut.edu.au/creative-industries. This position is located in the School of Communication, Kelvin Grove Campus.

The School of Communication

The QUT School of Communication is currently introducing new undergraduate and postgraduate curricula. The postgraduate program is focused on Digital Communication and the undergraduate program is structured into five majors:

  • Digital Media;
  • Media & Entertainment Industries;
  • Journalism;
  • Professional Communication; and
  • Advertising and Public Relations (taught by QUT Business School).

The curriculum is fundamentally driven by our world-leading research, which is primarily based in the Digital Media Research Centre. We are ranked as Australia’s leading School of Communication and we are number 16 in the world in the field of Media and Communication according to QS World University Rankings (2019). QUT is also ranked well above world standard in Australia in Communication and Media Studies, and above world standard in Cultural Studies, according to the national research quality assessment exercise conducted by the Australian Government in 2010, 2012, 2015, and 2019—‘Excellence in Research for Australia’ (ERA). It is the only university in Australia that has received the top ranking for Communication and Media Studies in every ERA round since 2010. QUT researchers in communication, media and cultural studies led the ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries & Innovation (CCI), as Australia’s only nationally funded Centre of Excellence devoted to these discipline fields. The School has established international connections including research and teaching partnerships with leading institutions in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Brazil, China, Indonesia, and South Africa, among others.

The Digital Media Research Centre

The QUT Digital Media Research Centre (DMRC) conducts world-leading research for a creative, inclusive and fair digital media environment. It is one of the top Australian centres for media and communication research, areas in which QUT has achieved the highest possible rankings in ERA, the national research quality assessment exercise. Our research priorities address the challenges of creativity and innovation, inclusion and diversity, and trust and fairness in the constantly changing digital media landscape. The DMRC has access to cutting-edge research infrastructure and capabilities in digital methods such as social media analytics. We actively engage with industry and international partners in Australia, Europe, Asia, the US, and South America; and we are especially proud of the dynamic and supportive research training environment we provide to our many local and international graduate students.

Led by Centre Director Jean Burgess, we are based in the School of Communication in the Creative Industries Faculty, with several core centre members based in the Law and Education Faculties and with collaborations across Health, Science and Engineering, and Business, as well as active participation in the Institute for Future Environments.

The DMRC is also a member of the global Network of Centers – a group of academic institutions with a focus on interdisciplinary research on the development, social impact, policy implications, and legal issues concerning the Internet.
