The Stanford University Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation is currently accepting applications for a highly-motivated, energetic and dynamic individual with exemplary human resources experience to serve as the Associate Athletics Director and Director, Human Resources. This position will provide strategic direction for the human resource-related functions for a large, complex, and dynamic department by managing the full range of human resources services, including, developing policies, programs, and processes; performing data, trend and statistical analyses; providing guidance on development of organizational structure, providing guidance to the department’s leadership, and managing staff related issues. This position will be a key member of the DAPER leadership team and will work independently as well as under the direction of the Deputy Athletics Director to address a variety of complex organizational and employee relations issues, requiring a high degree of confidentiality. Provide counsel and advice to a diverse group of individuals in an active, fast-paced, and challenging environment. Supervise human resources staff to accomplish goals and objectives.

Summary of Essential job functions:

  • Provide strategic direction and leadership for the Human Resources function for the Athletics Department.
  • Serve as a vital thought partner to the Deputy Athletics Director and the executive team on key HR initiatives.
  • Convert departmental strategic objectives into goals and measurable outcomes.
  • Analyzing and synthesizing data into coherent summaries for various audiences.
  • Effective communication to all audiences ranging from union employees to executive staff.
  • Manage salary-setting program. Advise managers on assignment of employees to appropriate classification levels; recommend, review and approve salary actions.
  • Oversee organizational-wide view of talent management (recruitment and staffing plans), and structure offers. Support or lead higher level searches, and advise on diversity objectives.
  • Responsible for hiring and retaining staff, career coaching, personal development for direct reports and accountable for the performance of employees.
  • Direct coaches, supervisors and managers in the interpretation and implementation of human resources policies, procedures and programs.
  • Continuously improve the onboarding and exit program for all staff and coaches
  • Design strategies for facilitating organizational and behavioral change. Perform needs assessment, analysis, and consulting on organizational issues; make recommendations on organizational design and development issues.
  • Investigate basic and complex employee relations issues, and initiate appropriate resolution; recommend and facilitate effective solutions in alignment with applicable policies and laws. Work in consultation with deputy athletics director and institutional employee/labor relations staff to resolve highly complex issues. Advise coaches, leadership and staff on organizational, employee, and employee and labor relations issues.
  • Evaluate, refine and modify performance appraisal process; design procedures and documents specific to the organization, as needed. Provide relevant coaching and guidance.
  • Assess organizational and individual staff development needs. Identify, communicate, and consult with staff on desirable training and career development opportunities. Develop and conduct a robust and relevant training program and participate in training design.
  • Oversee processes for workers’ compensation, disability, leave, work place accommodation requests, and health and safety issues; inform managers and deputy athletics director.
  • Oversee and approve human resources transactions submitted for processing. Prepare reports, and analyze data available through local and centralized database resources.
  • Manage the performance of direct reports. Set team objectives, priorities, and resources to align with department objectives.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree and at least seven years relevant experience with progressive responsibility. An advanced degree is highly desirable.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, creative problem solving, judgment, negotiating, influencing, and strategic decision-making skills. Unwavering ability to maintain confidentiality, and to apply tact, and diplomacy in every situation.
  • Demonstrated experience as a consultant and advisor to senior management in all human resources areas, including: employee relations, employment and labor law, compensation, staffing and employment, training and development, performance coaching and management, and organizational development.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and understanding of group dynamics. Successful track record of establishing credibility and trust with a diverse client group, including senior leaders. Demonstrated leadership skills and management courage.
  • Demonstrated ability to advise on and implement organizational change. Demonstrated end-to-end experience in the development and execution of organization-wide initiatives.
  • Excellent facilitation and oral and written communication skills; ability to prepare clear and concise reports and deliver formal presentations or training to senior management and audiences at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong supervision/management and staff development experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with business applications, such as Microsoft Office suite (with a high level of proficiency with spreadsheets) and human resource information systems.
  • A track record of success in a fast paced and dynamic environment, with experience in a D1 Athletics Department preferred
