Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge in green chemistry? Do you have research experience in synthetic chemistry and reaction discovery? Do you want to work in one of the UK’s leading research intensive universities?

This project aims to deliver synthetically useful organic reactions to support the use of water as a reaction media in High Value Chemical Manufacture. Water has long been promoted as an environmentally friendly and safe 'green' reaction media for synthetic processes which can lead to much more sustainable and cost effective manufacturing process[1].  Nevertheless, the green credential of water has been limited due to issues related to organic contamination of the water waste stream, cost of subsequent treatment and the often required organic solvents at purification stage.

You will work in a collaborative research team based in the Institute of Process Research & Development to discover novel ‘on water’ reactions, and to develop fundamental understanding of these reactions to deliver the following objectives: (i) a range of synthetically useful and industrially relevant ‘on water’ reactions, (ii) rationalisation on water-acceleration effect which will guide further reaction discovery, and (iii) demonstrations of these new reactions, through evaluation of green metrics, in novel syntheses of important targets. These outputs will have transformative impacts in the high value chemical manufacture industry, delivering lower cost and better quality controlled processes through shorter routes, reduced organic waste and facile interfacing between chemo- and biocatalytic processes.

You will have a PhD (or have submitted your thesis before taking up the role) in Chemistry, a strong background in synthetic methodology development and experience in performing and optimising organic reactions.
