Teaching

Detailed Description

Based on the Edinburgh campus the post holder will be responsible for delivering BIM/Revit tutorials and wider digital construction technology support for the School's programmes in Construction Management, Civil Engineering and Architectural Engineering. The post holder sits within the Information Services team, one of 8 professional services teams within the School, and is managed by the Information Services Manager. The Information Services team in the School covers IT, Web and Student Resources. The professional services teams within the School are committed to pursuing excellence and within this context aim to provide a supportive and professional environment in which excellent research, education and knowledge exchange can flourish.

The post-holder will be required to liaise closely with members of academic staff and to have a strong focus on delivering high quality support to the student population.

This post has potential to support a wider investment in digital construction across the built environment portfolio at Heriot-Watt University. The successful candidate will work with others to build our cutting-edge teaching in digital construction technologies, including 5D simulation modelling, digital twin strategies, AR and VR capabilities. This role is linked to our Centre for Excellence in Digital Construction in Dubai, and the entrepreneurial GRID hub building in Edinburgh. For the right candidate, the school is willing to provide additional training in these or similar areas.

Key duties and responsibilities

The role is a part-time (0.5 FTE) Digital Construction Technician position, providing BIM/CAD technology and software support across the School's teaching programmes. The successful candidate should have a construction industry or related background. They should be willing to develop as a CAD/BIM teacher so that they can use their skills and experience to deliver a high quality learning experience to the School's students.

This role is semester-time only (September to December and January to May) and a range of working patterns can be considered. The role could be worked on a part-time or full-time basis during semesters or could be split into two positions (e.g. each supporting 2.5 days per week or similar) during the same period. Working patterns will be discussed with shortlisted candidates at interview.

The key duties and responsibilities are as follows:

  1. Organise and deliver BIM/Revit/AutoCAD tutorials and support to students
  2. Design and develop tutorials in BIM and other emerging software applications for construction students, to ensure they support the learning and teaching portfolio
  3. Develop and update online support resources such as video tutorials for off-campus students

Education, qualifications and experience

Essential Criteria

  • In depth knowledge of BIM/CAD technology, techniques and software, typically as used within the construction industry today, for example AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills to interact positively with the postgraduate and undergraduate level students for learning and teaching purposes.
  • Ability to learn and recruit innovative technologies as they develop.
  • Willingness to develop as an effective CAD teacher. This will require identifying and attending training as necessary.
  • Ability to provide IT support to large group of users with different backgrounds and levels of IT knowledge and experience.
  • Hands-on installation, configuration and updating and fault diagnosis for BIM software packages.
  • Ability to write user manuals, tutorials, etc. for BIM packages.
  • Experience of providing one to one IT training, and supporting group training/teaching

Desirable Criteria

  • Some experience with software applications to meet BIM level 2 requirements of the modern UK construction industry.
  • Existing teaching experience preferably with adult learners.
  • A teaching qualification would be beneficial.
