About the position

The Norwegian Research Centre for Hydropower Technology (HydroCen) has a vacancy for a postdoctoral fellowship. HydroCen is hosted by the Department of Energy and Process Engineering at NTNU in Trondheim, Norway, and it is funded by the Research Council of Norway and the Norwegian hydropower industry. The research is both theoretical and experimental and it is mainly focused on hydropower technology. However, the market, environmental impact and social acceptance is also part of the research.

The candidate will work on optimization of variable speed Francis turbines for future flexible operation. It involves both numerical optimisation and experimental work in the laboratory. The work will be part of work package 2 in HydroCen and directly working together with the project; Variable Speed Operation. More information can be found here:

The head of the department is Professor Terese Løvås. The position’s supervision is by Professor Ole Gunnar Dahlhaug.   

Main duties and responsibilities

The candidate for this position will carry out development of HydroCen’s  theoretical models on the optimisation of Francis turbine designs related to variable speed operation and carry out verification through model testing in the Waterpower Laboratory at NTNU.

Qualification requirements

A postdoctoral research fellowships is a qualification position in which the main objective is qualification for work in academic positions. Completion of a Norwegian doctoral degree in Mechanical/Fluid Engineering or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree is required.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience from design optimisation, experimental work and numerical calculations on hydraulic machinery.

The successful candidate should be creative, independent, and have a strong ability to work on a problem orientated project.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

Other qualifications:

  • PhD degree within Mechanical/Fluid Engineering;
  • Experience from numerical analysis (CFD-analysis) of Francis turbines;
  • Experience from laboratory work and physical experiments on Francis turbines according to IEC-standards;
  • Experience from programming design and optimization algorithms;
  • Excellent written and oral English language skills

We offer

Salary and conditions

Postdoctoral candidates are remunerated in code 1352, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 515 200 before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is two years. The position is fully funded by the Norwegian Research Centre for Hydropower Technology, HydroCen.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
