PhD Position in Political Science
About the position
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU, Trondheim) offers a full-time fully funded 3-year PhD position within the Department of Sociology and Political Science. The position includes three years of research and may include up to one more year of work for the department.
The Department of Sociology and Political Science (ISS) is committed to carrying out teaching, research, and dissemination of knowledge in sociology, political science, sport science, and media studies. The Department has approximately 95 employees and is involved in 11 study programs. ISS is characterised by a strong focus on the social sciences with the emphasis on sociology and political science, contributing to multidisciplinary study programs and research at NTNU. This PhD project is part of the project “UNelected REPresentatives: The Impact on Liberal Democracy in Europe (UNREP)”. It investigates the composite nature of representative claims made by unelected individuals, the extent to which citizens feel represented through such claims, and the impact of this sense of representation on citizens’ perspectives on liberal democracy in Europe. The main research question is thus: How and to what extent do representative claims made by unelected individuals resonate with citizens and affect their views on liberal democracy? The project is supervised by Associate Professor Pieter de Wilde at the Department of Sociology and Political Science, NTNU and Prof. Dr. Oliver Treib, University of Münster. Together with the two project leaders, the PhD will focus on designing a comparative survey including a conjoint analysis and experimental component and analyse the resulting data.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Conduct a stand-alone research project.
- Participate in the general activities of the department.
- Participate in the research group «Elections, Values and Political Communication» EVPOC.
- Complete a training component as part of the PhD of a minimum of 30 ECTS.
- Participate in international activities such as conference attendance and/or research stays at educational institutions abroad.
A master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 ECTS credits) at the time of job commencement with a strong academic background in social science preferably political science or sociology, or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be admitted only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

- Good oral and written communication skills in English.
- Willingness to collaborate in interdisciplinary research projects.
- Working knowledge of Norwegian and/or German will be considered advantageous.

Salary and conditions
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 479 600 per annum before tax. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is 3 years. The position may be ascribed obligation to work, and extended with up to one year. Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in Social Sciences, specializing in political science/sociology. As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work. It is a prerequisite that the appointed takes up residence in Trondheim in order to be present and available for the institution as required. Work place will be Department of Sociology and Political Science, NTNU.
The desired start-up date for the project is 1 April 2020, or before.
